Blink Doorbell Command Failed To Complete? (Quick Fix)

blink doorbell command failed to complete

Seeing “Blink doorbell command failed to complete” error, feeling like the device has a mind of its own, refusing to follow orders?

Don’t worry–this is a common issue with an easy solution!

This “command failed” error can occur during the setup of your product or upon attempting to access a particular function.

It could indicate one of several things:

  • There’s a problem with the network or Wi-Fi.
  • There’s an issue with the Blink Sync Module.
  • A potential fault with your doorbell’s batteries.

These are the prevalent causes of the issue, so you should focus on diagnosing connection, power supply, or syncing problems with the doorbell.

How to Fix Blink Doorbell Command Failed to Complete Error?

Note: Don’t skip any of the steps!

1. Take Out Blink’s Batteries

take out blink’s batteries

In most cases, the “Command Failed to Complete” error is related to a temporal displacement of the Blink doorbell’s batteries.

The device uses two size-AA 1.5 volt, non-rechargeable Lithium batteries which last for about several months.

This means that the Blink doorbell is completely wire-free and doesn’t need an existing doorbell installation, unlike other strictly hardwired doorbells.

Here’s how to access and remove Blink’s batteries:

  1. Remove Blink from the mounting plate.
  2. Locate the compartment’s release latch.
  3. Pull the latch up, to uninstall the cover.
  4. Remove both batteries from the doorbell.
  5. Wait 10 seconds and place them back in.
  6. Close the doorbell’s battery compartment.
  7. Install Blink on the doorbell mounting plate.

Allow the doorbell to load for 20–30 seconds and resume the initial setup through the Blink app!

Important: To exclude the possibility of faulty batteries, we recommend installing a fresh pair!

2. Troubleshoot the Blink App

troubleshoot the blink app

A problem with the Blink app is among the reasons why your doorbell keeps failing to execute commands.

Hence, several different techniques for addressing app issues include updating the firmware, reinstalling, and clearing the cache.

Step #1 Update your Blink App

Start by accessing the App Store or Google Play on your smartphone, then navigate to the app storage.

Next, locate the Blink app and press the “Check for Updates” or directly the “Update” button to install the most recent version.

Step #2 Clear the Cache/Offload

You can clear the Blink app’s cache on Android devices by heading to “Settings” → “Apps” → “Blink app” → “Clear Data/Clear Cache”.

On iPhones, however, you’re limited to offloading the app, which temporarily removes it from the storage.

You can offload Blink by going to “Settings” → “General” → “iPhone Storage” → “Blink app” → “Offload”.

Step #3 Uninstall the Blink App

uninstall the blink app

If nothing else worked, press and hold on the Blink app’s icon to show the actions menu, then press “Delete” or “Uninstall” on your Android/iPhone.

Wait for several seconds, then reinstall the app through the respective app store.

Quick Tip: Verify the automatic updates for the Blink app are set to “On” after the reinstallation.

3. Resolve Any Network Issues

Network problems are the leading reasons why the Blink command failed to complete, and you are unable to finalize the initialization.

As we’ve clarified earlier, the “Command Failed to Complete” error is unique to the initial setup of the doorbell and appears before or after assigning the doorbell to the network.

However, the doorbell’s Wi-Fi setup consists of two steps:

  • Connecting the mobile device to the doorbell’s Wi-Fi.
  • Connecting your doorbell to the home’s router Wi-Fi.

If there’s an error with either of these steps, your doorbell command execution will likely fail.

#1 Reboot the Network Router

reboot the network router

Start by unplugging your Wi-Fi router from the power for approximately 30–40 seconds.

This is enough to drain the electrical supply of the router entirely and relaunch the system and services.

#2 Lower Network Congestion

Try to limit the number of connected devices and cease all high-data processes your network is currently hosting.

This includes downloading and uploading since those could skyrocket your network’s bandwidth consumption.

#3 Configure the GUI Settings

To access your router’s GUI, go to http://192.168.0.1, or use your default gateway.

You can find it by typing “ipconfig” in the Command Prompt of your Windows PC or looking for it on a sticker on the router.

To sign in, use admin/admin or admin/password.

configure the gui settings

Then, do the following:

  • Refresh the DHCP list: Ensure your Blink doorbell’s static IP address is not prohibited in any way by going to “Network” → “DHCP”, then “Flush” or “Reset”.
  • Disable dual-band: As Blink doorbells do not support 5 GHz, we recommend disabling “Split Banding” or “Dual Banding” in the “Network” settings of the router.
  • Change the WPA: Set the WPA of your router to “WPA3” or “WPA2/3 Mixed” through the “Wireless” or “Wi-Fi” settings in the GUI.
  • Adjust the frame protection: If your router supports it, set the “802.11w Management Frame Protection” of the 2.4 GHz thread to “Disabled” and test.
  • Change the DNS: Ensure your router works over Google’s default DNS values: Primary “8.8.8.8” and Secondary “8.8.4.4”.

Tip: Get in touch with your ISP for any underlying issues with the network.

4. Re-add the Sync Module (Optional)

re-add the sync module (optional)’

A present Blink Sync Module could interfere with the setup of the Blink doorbell.

Of course, that would only happen if there’s an underlying network fault with either of the devices and both the doorbell and module are added to the same system configuration.

Among the variety of Sync Module functions, there’s extended device support (up to 10 devices simultaneously), improved connection quality, and access to unique options.

How to Re-add the Blink Sync Module?

For the Sync Module to work, it must be manually assigned to the Blink application by the user and connected to the local Wi-Fi network.

Then, it interconnects with all of the supported devices on your network, extends their range, and provides access to new features.

re-add the blink sync module

Here’s how to re-add the Sync Module from the app:

  1. Open the Blink app and tap on the system that has the module.
  2. Tap the sync module to navigate to the device’s system settings.
  3. Scroll to the bottom, then tap “Delete Sync Module” and confirm.
  4. Tap “Add Device+” from the homepage of the same Blink system.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to reconnect your Sync Module.

Tip: While adding the sync module, verify the router is online and check for any LED indications such as blinking blue or blinking red.

5. Check for Smartphone Issues

A device-level problem could fail the setup of your Blink doorbell halfway through and result in the “Command Failed to Complete” error.

Your smartphone needs to be up-to-date and have a secure connection to the Wi-Fi, before setting up your doorbell.

check for smartphone issues

Check the following things on your smartphone:

  • The smartphone firmware is up-to-date.
  • The “Mobile Data” is set to “Disabled”.
  • The “Bluetooth” feature is set to “On”.
  • You’re connected to the home’s Wi-Fi.
  • The “Personal Hotspot” option is “Off”.
  • There’s sufficient space in the storage.

Pro Tip: We recommend trying to set up the Blink doorbell through an alternative mobile device!

6. Create a New Blink System

Well, if you’re attempting to add the Blink doorbell to an already-populated system without an additional Sync Module, you will receive the command error.

So, we recommend setting up a brand-new system, free of other devices, and adding the Blink doorbell as a standalone device.

create a new blink system

Here’s how:

  1. Open the Blink app and tap the “+” symbol.
  2. After that, tap “Blink Video Doorbell” below.
  3. Press “Create New System” in the prompts.
  4. Give your new system a name and settings.
  5. Check if the Blink doorbell will now connect.

If the issue is resolved, keep using the doorbell in a separate system, and do not reconnect your Sync Module to the new configuration

7. Reset the Doorbell System

The factory reset is a solid approach when you keep seeing the “Blink doorbell command failed to complete” error.

All it takes to restore the doorbell’s settings is to remove the batteries and hold the “Reset” button on the back of the faceplate.

reset the doorbell system

The procedure lasts for less than 20–30 seconds and holds the greatest chance of fixing your doorbell unless the device has a production fault.

So, hold the “Reset” button on the faceplate for around 7 seconds to reset your blink doorbell.

When ready, relaunch the Blink application and attempt to re-add the device into a new system.

Note: If you keep getting the error, we recommend getting in touch with Blink support and/or trying to claim a replacement through your product warranty.
