Is Blink Doorbell Not Recording Clips? (Instant Fix!)

If Blink doorbell is not recording clips can leave you feeling insecure, due to the absence of a trustworthy motion detector security.
Don’t worry–we got this covered!
By default, the “Video Recording” feature is enabled for all the Blink doorbells, but it remains dependent on the camera’s motion detection capabilities.
By the end of this guide, you will know all possible reasons why the Blink doorbell refuses to store recordings and how to fix it.
How To Fix When Blink Doorbell Not Recording Clips?
Note: Have you checked if you receive motion detection notifications and just the missing clips?
1. Check If The “Video Recording” is ON

So, without enabling “Video Recording,” your Blink doorbell may still detect motion, but it won’t capture and store any of the events in your cloud storage.
That’s why the feature must be set to “On” within the Blink camera’s settings, although it’s enabled by default.
- To turn on “Video Recording,” go to Blink app → “Doorbell thumbnail” → “Device Settings” → “Privacy Settings” → “Video Recording ON.”
Now, exit the tab and walk past your doorbell to check if you received a notification and if a video clip recording was initiated.
If not, proceed with the next step as there could be a motion detection fault.
2. Adjust Blink’s Motion Detection Settings
The leading reason why the Blink video doorbell is not recording clips is that it has misconfigured motion detection settings.
Several settings define the functionality of your camera’s motion detection, which is essential to creating recordings.
Here’s a list of the important motion detection features!
Set the Blink Doorbell System to “Armed”

The first and most important step is setting your system to “Armed.” Otherwise, the camera will not detect motion, even if the feature is set to “On” as it is by default.
You can adjust the status of your doorbell system from the homepage of the Blink app by tapping the “Armed” button.
Ensure the Motion Detection is Enabled
Although the “Motion Detection” feature tends to be enabled by default, a recent update glitch, app cache or reception problems might cause it to be deactivated.
- To enable the feature, go to Blink app → “More” → “Motion Detection” → “Motion Detection On.”
Tip: The icon of the “running man” in the motion detection menu should turn blue once enabled.
Adjust the Blink Camera’s Motion Zones
Adjusting the detection zones is extremely important when it comes to receiving motion alerts and frequent video recordings.
- To access the motion zones configurations, go to “More” → “Device Settings” → “Motion Settings” → “Motion Zones” → “Update photo.”
Now, tap each of the squares that you wish to include in the motion detection, taken from the Blink camera’s current live feed.
Configure the Camera Motion Sensitivity

The last, but not the least important setting is the motion sensitivity for your camera detection.
This option defines the intensity of movement the camera requires to trigger a motion event and create a recording respectively.
- You can adjust the sensitivity by going to “More” → “Device Settings” → “Motion Settings” → “Sensitivity.”
By default, the sensitivity’s value should be set to “5” but we recommend bumping it up a few notches to 7 or maybe even 8.
Tip: We also recommend setting the “Clip Length” feature to “Off” as it could sometimes disrupt the creation of video recordings.
3. Reboot the Blink Sync Module Unit

Many users with larger Blink monitoring installations tend to have a sync module that re-routes the traffic in your local network and manages all of your Blink devices.
So, the module tends to frequently produce issues with the video clip recording and a reboot should eliminate the issue.
- All you have to do to power cycle the Blink doorbell is unplug it from the power supply for approximately 60 seconds while the electricity has drained entirely.
While waiting for the sync module to discharge, check if the power adapter is in good condition and test the electrical outlet the model connects with.
A recurring outage of the power supply might disrupt the reception of the Blink doorbell cameras and prevent them from recording clips.
Note: The module is mandatory for indoor and outdoor installations, but not for the Blink video doorbell.
4. Test & Fix Potential Network Issues
The next leading cause of why your Blink doorbell is not recording clips is an outage of the internal network or Wi-Fi.

As you probably know, the Blink video doorbells only use Wi-Fi to connect to the internet and access the cloud services of Blink for storing the recordings.
- To ensure the camera is connected, go to Blink app → “More” → “Device Settings” → “General Settings” → “Change Wi-Fi” and reconnect to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi thread.
Now, let’s review some network troubleshooting tips!
- Unplug the router from the power for ~60 seconds.
- Check if the service cable is plugged appropriately.
- Reduce the bandwidth consumption of the network.
- Lower the amount of connected devices to the Wi-Fi.
- Reset your network router through the web interface.
If the doorbell camera does not remain connected, you can test it on your mobile’s hotspot by activating the feature and following the instructions above for setup.
So, if other devices on your network are also having issues, it’s time to get in touch with your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Alert: The Blink video doorbells are only compatible with a 2.4 GHz frequency.
5. Check the Local Motion Clips Storage

There’s a good chance that the local cloud storage of your Blink doorbell has reached its limits and can no longer store new files.
That’s why we recommend uninstalling several motion clips from the storage of your doorbell and checking if that addresses the problem.
- To view the motion clips of your doorbell, go to “Blink app” → “Home Screen” and tap “Clips” at the bottom of the navigation bar.
- To uninstall motion clips, play the video from the library, wait for the on-screen controls to show, tap the trash icon, and press on “DELETE CLIP.”
If you wish a larger storage without having to delete clips, we recommend upgrading your cloud subscription at Blink to a better plan through the app’s settings.
Tip: Repeat this procedure for at least 5–6 older clips that you no longer have use of.
6. Reinstall the Blink Mobile Application

Maybe, the Blink doorbell is refusing to create recordings due to an issue with the Blink mobile app.
If that’s the case, our best recommendation is a clean reinstallation from your smartphone to help clear the excess cache files, corrupt app data, update the OS, and eliminate other faults.
Here’s how to reinstall the Blink app effortlessly:
- Open the Google Play Store or App Store on your phone.
- Google Play: Head to “Profile” → “Manage Installed Apps.”
- App Store: Go to “See pending updates and release notes.”
- Next, locate the Blink app in the list of installed applications.
- Tap the manage button and press on the “Uninstall” option.
- After that, wait until the Blink app is successfully uninstalled.
- Use the provided store search field to re-download the app.
Tip: Clear the cache files of the Blink app periodically to prevent issues with the performance!
7. Reset the Camera to Default Settings

Well, if your Blink doorbell not recording clips, then it’s time for a more drastic measure – a factory reset.
All of your video doorbell’s data and settings will be erased as a result, which will hopefully address the fault with the creation of video clips.
- To reset the Blink doorbell, remove the faceplate and find the “RESET” button on the internal panel that you must press and hold for 11–12 seconds.
After the camera blinks, release the button and wait until the camera reboots.
Then, follow the setup instructions within the app and check if the video clips are now working.
