How to Fix When Your Blink Doorbell Doesn’t Ring Inside?
Note: Have you made sure that you use a compatible chime that supports 16–24V and 50/60Hz as per Blink’s instructions?
1. Check if the Chime is Properly Wired

For non-techy people, it’s important to determine if your chime is wired properly or not.
- Blink doorbells are compatible with both digital and mechanical chimes, but the installation varies from type to type.
First, let’s understand the difference between the chimes and identify the type you have!
1.1 Mechanical Vs. Digital Chime:
While both chimes serve a different purpose, the mechanical chime produces a noise via a bell and a hammer, while the digital one has an electronic speaker.
An existing doorbell installation is required to use both chimes, but there won’t be any issues on Blink’s end.
All Blink doorbell models can work with a system that provides up to 16–24 VAC at about 50–60 Hz and a maximum of 40VA.
1.2 How to Identify a Chime Type?
As established, the digital chime can produce a pre-specified ringing noise through an app or a configuration panel, whilst the mechanical chime uses a hammer and a bell.
The easiest way to tell what type of doorbell chime you have is by the sound, but alternatively, search for a battery.
Unlike the mechanical chime that uses terminals, the digital chime has a rechargeable battery that’s connected to a compatible transformer.
1.3 How to Inspect Chime Wiring?

The wiring installation for mechanical and digital chimes is quite similar, with the only difference being in the transformer’s location and wire distribution.
Let’s explore the difference:
- Mechanical chime: The wire must go through the transformer, connect to the chime box “Trans”, move to the front chime box, and then hook up with the Blink doorbell.
- Digital chime: The wire must go through the transformer, plug into the trans chime box, and install the digital chime adapter provided by Blink. The last steps are to position the front chime box, and then into the Blink doorbell.
This is a relatively complex installation, so it’s recommended that a technician do it.
So, if you’re unaware whether or not your chime is installed properly, contact a professional, unless you’re experienced yourself.
Warning: Ensure all of the system’s power is suspended before proceeding with the inspection!
2. Inspect the Doorbell’s Wiring

The reason why your Blink doorbell not ringing inside could be because the doorbell is not wired properly with the chime’s wiring installation.
Hence, as established, all Blink doorbells require an existing installation in order to connect and work in unison with your digital or mechanical chime.
Warning: Deactivate the power at the circuit breaker before proceeding to work on your doorbell and chime wiring.
What Wires Does Blink Doorbell Need?
The Blink doorbell’s faceplate connects with the chime’s transformer wires, which run to your door frame.
The “C” and “GROUND” wires of the transformer must be secured around the terminals of your doorbell’s faceplate and the screw must be tightened with the Torx screwdriver.
The Blink doorbell also has a security screw that’s on the bottom of the faceplate and must be removed for the doorbell body to come off.
How to Access the Blink Doorbell Wiring?
All you have to do to access the doorbell’s wiring is release the faceplate and undo the screws of the mounting base.
Then, you will be able to pull out all the base equipment of the doorbell, along with the transformer wires that are coming out of your wall.
How to Wire the Blink Doorbell Correctly?

To ensure the wires are secured properly, use the supplied screwdriver to carefully tighten them around the terminal poles.
We advise not to apply too much force with the screwdriver and only tighten the screws once you’ve made sure the wires are secured and contacting the terminals.
Tip: If the copper conductors of the wires are not long enough, use a wire stripper or a knife!
3. Reset the Circuit Breaker’s Power
Perhaps, a reset of your home’s power supply would address any existing problems with both the chime and doorbell.
Most doorbell installations are directly wired with the circuit breaker and have a separate switch that controls the power.

Here’s how to reset the doorbell installation’s power:
- Navigate to the circuit breaker box of your home.
- Locate the doorbell wiring switch in the panel.
- Push the power button towards the “Off” polarity.
- Wait for 10–15 seconds and push it back to “On”.
Once the doorbell starts up, check if pressing the “RING” button will cause your doorbell to blink in blue.
Additionally, if you have a digital chime, it should also light up shortly after pushing the circuit breaker switch.
Note: If you have experienced a recent power outage, you may need to wait for 30–40 minutes after the power kicks back in for the full voltage to be restored.
4. Identify Potential Doorbell Issues
So, if the Blink doorbell won’t ring inside, there could be a problem with the doorbell itself, rather than the chime or the installation.
If the input produced by your Blink doorbell that causes the chime to ring is not recognized, try some of the following approaches:
Power Cycle the Blink Doorbell

The power cycle is a simple, yet highly effective method to address underlying faults with the doorbell.
- It works by removing the batteries.
To remove the Blink doorbell’s batteries, uninstall the faceplate from your wall mount, pull the compartment’s release latch outwards, and eject the two double-A batteries from the inside.
Tip: Wait for 30–40 seconds, place the batteries back in and if Blink still refuses to work, insert a fresh set of matching batteries.
Check & Uplift the Wi-Fi Status

There’s a way to check the connection quality and status of the Blink doorbell through the mobile app.
So, enter the Blink app on your phone, then go to “More” → “Device Settings” → “General Settings” → “Network” and check if the connection is “Weak”, “Medium” or “Good”.
If the quality is degraded, we recommend rebooting your router and limiting the amount of devices connected to the network.
Important: If your Blink doorbell keeps dropping connection, this explains the reason why the Chime is not ringing.
Factory Reset Blink Doorbell
A factory reset should address all software-related issues with the doorbell and restore the signal with the chime.
So, to initiate the reset, remove both batteries of the doorbell and hold the Reset button on the faceplate’s back panel.
Then, release the button after approximately 10–15 seconds, place the batteries back in, and wait until the doorbell turns on.
Note: When you see your Blink doorbell flashing in a red light, it means it’s ready to be set up!
5. Use the Blink Mini Camera As a Chime (Workaround)

If you’re still wondering how to make the Blink doorbell ring inside house, especially if you have no installed chime, don’t worry–all you need is a Blink Mini Camera.
The best thing about using Blink’s camera as a chime is that it doesn’t have to be wired, and the chime tone can be completely customized through the app.

- Camera volume: Drag towards the left or right to adjust the camera’s volume.
- Chime volume: Drag towards the left or right to adjust the chime’s volume.
Note: The chime will be played each time there’s an adjustment to the settings.
6. Search for an Installation Problem
If all else fails, and your Blink doorbell doesn’t ring inside, there’s a strong possibility that the wiring of your chime or doorbell is disrupted somewhere along the trace.
Of course, identifying issues with the installations by yourself would be exceptionally difficult, so it’s best to contact a technician, preferably the one that wired your house.

If you’re hesitant about whether or not the problem is with the installation, you can test the Blink doorbell on another existing installation, for example, your neighbor’s.
If the doorbell chime is receiving any feedback from the doorbell at their house, then there’s certainly a wiring problem.
