Why Is Blink Doorbell Blinking Red? (Let’s Fix It Fast)

Are you wondering why is Blink doorbell blinking red? Don’t worry—it just means your Blink doorbell is disconnected.
- The blinking red light on your Blink doorbell simply indicates that the device is ready to be set up and is currently looking for an active connection.
The red light on your Blink doorbell may start blinking suddenly in case your network disappears (password change) or is inaccessible.
If your Blink doorbell has been successfully connected to the network and something caused it to disconnect, the red light will turn into a solid red color.
Again, don’t worry–we got you covered!
Why is Blink Doorbell Blinking Red – Here’s How to Fix!
Note: Keep in mind that when some Blink doorbell models detect motion, such as the Indoor, XT2, XT, and Blink Outdoor, the LED will briefly flash in red to indicate.
1. Connect Blink Doorbell to Wi-Fi

Well, before we begin with the actual troubleshooting, it’s best to attempt reconnecting the Blink doorbell to the Wi-Fi.
This may instantly resolve the problem, considering that the issue may be incidental and a one-time occurrence.
Here’s how to connect the Blink video doorbell to the Wi-Fi:
- Open the Blink app and ensure you are signed in.
- Tap on “Add Device” and choose/create a system.
- Scan the QR code on the Blink doorbell to continue.
- Connect your app to the temporal “BLINK” network.
- Select the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to connect your doorbell.
- Complete the remaining instructions within the app.
That’s it. If it’s not working or your Blink doorbell keeps blinking in red, continue reading ahead…
2. Check Your Internet Connection

Another important thing to try when you’re facing the red blinking light on a Blink video doorbell is to check your internet connection and Wi-Fi.
If the internet supply is down or the Wi-Fi is not accessible, your Blink doorbell will not be able to connect with the app and will notify you by triggering the red blinking light.
How to Test Your Internet Connection?
- Test if you can access your internet and surf the web.
- Use your smartphone to test the network accessability.
- Test the speed of the Wi-Fi from the doorbell’s location.
If you have a computer you can use the CMD or Terminal to ping, for example, Google’s DNS and check the responses.
If you see “timed out”, this means that your internet is dropping out.
Note: The pinging command for the Windows system’s CMD is “ping 8.8.8.8 -t”.
How to Optimize Your Wi-Fi Connection?

Note: If your broadband and Wi-Fi seem to be working well, reconnect your doorbell and test.
3. Remove & Reinsert the Batteries
So, if the Blink doorbell flashes red 6 times, or the LED indicator behaves in an unusual way, the issue is sometimes related to the battery.
That’s why a quick way to fix the problem would be to open the cover, remove the battery for a few minutes, and then re-insert it back it mindfully.

To reinsert or replace the batteries on a Blink doorbell, you only need to remove the device from the wall mount and reveal the back cover.
Note: In some severe cases, the unusual blinking of the red light might be caused by a lethal battery problem, hence start considering a replacement.
4. Delete and Re-Add Your Doorbell
Sometimes, the blinking red light appears because of a bug within the Blink applications and the system with your doorbell.
Hence, a quick way to fix the problem would be to simply delete and re-add the entire system in which your Blink doorbell has been registered, upon the initialization.

Here’s how to quickly remove the Blink doorbell system from the app:
- Open the Blink app and access the “Settings”.
- Choose “Device” and then “System Settings”.
- Tap the name of the system of your doorbell.
- Select “Delete System” to remove the system.
Note: When you delete your doorbell from the app, it’s normal for the red light to be blinking so, go back up to step #1 from this guide to connect your Blink to Wi-Fi.
5. Disable Router’s “Smart Connect”
Still, wondering why is my Blink doorbell camera blinking red?
So, one of the common reasons for flashing a red light on your Blink doorbell is constant Wi-Fi disconnects and dropouts.
These disconnects can sometimes appear because of a setting on dual-band routers, that combine the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi frequencies into one network.

Hence, if your router is dual-band, but you only have one Wi-Fi, it’s good to log into the GUI and disable the option that merges both networks.
How to Access Router Interface?
- Connect a computer or phone to the router via Ethernet/Wi-Fi.
- In the web browser’s URL type “192.168.1.1” or “192.168.0.1”.
- Sign in using the correct credentials (commonly admin/admin).
How to Disable “Smart Connect”?

Since every different networking brand has its own name for the “smart connect” feature, you need to look for something along those lines:
- Smart Connect
- Band Steering
- Smart Wi-Fi
- Wi-Fi Merge
- And more…
When you disable the feature, connect your Blink doorbell to the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi of your router and check whether the device will disconnect and blink in red.
6. Factory Reset Your Blink Doorbell
You still can’t find out why the Blink doorbell is blinking red. Don’t worry–the big gun method is here!
If nothing works and the Blink doorbell is just blinking in red without proper reasoning, it’s time for a factory reset.

This process will remove the Blink doorbell from the app and Wi-Fi, resetting all settings to defaults permanently.
Hence, we recommend checking the app for important data.
- To factory reset the Blink doorbell, press and hold the “RESET” button on the back of the device for 5–10 seconds with the batteries inserted.
That’s it. Your Blink doorbell is now ready to be re-added to your Blink account and application!
