Is Your Toniebox Not Holding Charge? (Let’s Fix It Fast)
Is your Toniebox not holding charge and turning off immediately after unplugging it from the charger? Not to worry! There are a few possibilities for such a problem.
Your Toniebox is either not withdrawing voltage from the outlet, the battery is stuck in a “deep discharge” state or your Toniebox battery is dead.
In this guide, we’ll help you decipher the problem and hopefully resolve it!
Toniebox Not Holding Charge – 6 Quick Ways To Fix!
Warning: Some of the methods used in this guide will permanently void your Toniebox warranty!
1. Power Cycle Your Toniebox
If you’re suspicious that your Toneibox is no longer holding charge, it’s always recommended to begin with simple methods such as power circulation.
This method is very easy, as you only need to disconnect your Toniebox from the charger for about 5–10 minutes without interacting.
This will completely discharge the residual voltage, providing your Toniebox with a fresh startup and hopefully, the battery will start charging.
Important: If your Toneibox has been exposed to extreme temperatures, it’s recommended to let the device acclimatize for a few hours before charging it.
2. Factory Reset the Toniebox
In many cases, the charging problem is not related to the battery, but rather with the software and a quick factory restoration might fix the issue in seconds.
However, note that a factory reset will permanently erase any downloaded Tonies and reset all settings of your Toniebox to default.
Here’s how to factory reset Toniebox in easy steps:
- First, connect your Toniebox to the charger.
- Flip the Toniebox and charger upside down.
- Then, press both ears for 10–15 seconds.
- Release the ears when you hear the sound.
This will trigger a factory reset on your Toniebox. When the reset is over, try charging your box!
3. Use a Tested Power Socket
Well, if you’re trying to charge your Toniebox from a faulty power outlet, the box will turn off after being disconnected.
Hence, before we proceed further, we strongly recommend testing whether the power outlet that you’re charging the Toniebox in is working normally and providing voltage.
For this purpose, you can connect any low-voltage appliance such as a lamp, to check whether the outlet works well.
If not, connect your Toniebox to a different outlet and try charging the unit.
Important: Use Direct Connection!
It’s crucial to connect your Toniebox power adapter directly to the socket without any third-party devices such as dividers, extenders, and smart plugs.
4. Replug the Toniebox Battery
Sometimes, when the Toniebox not charging, the fault comes from the connection of the battery to the primary circuit.
A quick solution would be to disassemble the music box, eject the battery, and disconnect the battery’s cable connector of the terminal, going into the main circuit board.
Warning: This method will void your Toniebox warranty!
4.1 Disassembling Your Toniebox
- Unplug your Toniebox from the charger.
- Position your Toniebox on a solid surface.
- Verify that the ears are pointing upward.
- With your hands push the Toniebox down.
- While applying pressure, rotate to the left.
- You should hear an audible *click* release.
- You must flip your Toniebox upside down.
- Using a Philips screwdriver undo the screw.
- Then, flip the Toniebox the correct way up.
- Pull by the ears, to eject the inner chassis.
4.2 Reconnecting Toniebox Battery
Now that you’re holding the chassis, you can only disconnect the battery connector from the terminal by pulling it out.
If you want to go further, you can also slide up the entire battery pack to remove it from the chassis and eventually replace it with an original Toneibox 3.6V battery.
Tip: Keep the battery disconnected for 3–5 minutes, and re-assemble everything back again!
5. Jump the Toniebox’s Battery (Advanced)
If you’ve tried everything but your Toniebox battery just won’t hold a charge and the device turns off immediately after disconnecting, this is a battery-related issue.
Luckily, we’ve discovered that there is an effective way to “jump-start” the battery by using a higher-voltage battery and a wire.
This method is extremely effective when the battery is in the so-called “deep discharge” state, in which the battery won’t charge or hold voltage.
Warning: The process is quite complicated, so proceed with extreme caution!
5.1 Test the Battery Voltage
It’s quite important to begin by testing the Toniebox’s battery voltage using a Multimeter. This will further justify whether the battery cannot hold a charge.
The Toniebox battery should deliver the exact amount of 3.6V, and if you measure a lower output, that’s why it’s not holding the charge.
To use a Multimeter and measure the voltage output you must touch the prongs to the terminals on the battery and see the reading.
If you see a voltage around 2–2.2V, this justifies your issue.
5.2 Jump-Start Preparation
To jump-start the Toniebox battery, you’ll need a few tools and preparation:
- 9V battery (higher-risk with higher voltage).
- Two short-length hobby wires with live ends.
- Recommended: Electrically isolated gloves.
If you’re using a higher voltage battery, proceed with extreme caution as the voltage difference is too great.
You might encounter a short circuit or permanently damage your Toniebox battery.
5.3 Jump-Start The Battery
When you’re ready to begin, there are two major steps involved:
- Connect one of your hobby wires to the positive terminal of your 9V (or higher) battery to the positive (B+) terminal of the Toniebox battery.
- Connect the other hobby wire to the negative terminal of the 9V (or higher) battery to the negative terminal (B-) of your Toniebox battery.
Important: Hold the connection for only 3–5 seconds, which will temporarily boost the voltage of the Toniebox battery and revert the normal operation.
5.4 Test the Voltage Again
When you’re ready with the jump-starting process, connect the prongs of the Multimeter to the Toniebox battery again and check for voltage differences.
If you now see 3.5–3.6V, this means that the process was successful and your Toniebox should finally be able to recharge normally.
Quick Tip: Connect your Toniebox to the charger for a full 3–4 hours session before using it.
6. Replace the Toniebox Battery
Well, if your Toniebox not holding charge, even after everything you’ve tried, well, the battery is dead, and you have no other option but to replace it.
The longevity of a well-performing Toniebox battery is about 3 years, but there is no guarantee that the battery in your music box will last that long.
You can purchase a battery replacement for your Toniebox from online shops such as Amazon or eBay and replace the battery yourself.
We advise bookmarking this guide, so you can have quick access to Step 3.1 (disassembly) and Step 4.2 (battery reconnection) at your disposal.
Note: A brand-new 3.6V battery for a Toniebox costs around $20.
