Tonie Character Not Working – Top 5 Troubleshooting Steps!
Note: Ensure the Toniebox is at full battery capacity and connected to the charger!
1. Place Tonie Properly & Restart App
The first step is to ensure that the new character is recognized by the Toniebox upon placing it on the Tonie surface.
There’s a short recognition player upon installing a new Tonie that has never been in contact with the Toniebox before.
1.1 How to Register a New Tonie In the mytonies App?
The proper introduction sequence of a new character Tonie is the respective blue illumination of the LED as well as an audio message from the Toniebox.
Here are the in-app instructions:
- Ensure the new Tonie Character is placed on the Toniebox’s surface.
- Wait until the LED turns blue and the audio message’s annunciation.
- Close the mytonies app and remove it from your phone’s memory tab.
- Launch the mytonies app on your smartphone and navigate to “Mine.”
- Search for your new character under the “Tonies” section on the page.
- Assign your new Tonie with a name and with content once prompted.
Note: If the LED doesn’t shift to blue upon placing the new Tonie, there could be a fault with the contact surface of the box.
1.2 How to Inspect Tonie Surface On Toniebox?
As you’re probably already familiar with how the Toniebox works, no visual or audio indication upon placing the new audio and a persistent green light could mean a contact problem.
So, ensure the top of the Toniebox is free of any dust accumulation or debris that may prevent clear contact with the Tonie.
Additionally, verify that the Toniebox is connected to the charging station throughout the entire initial setup of the new Tonie.
2. Restore the Toniebox’s Internet Connection
So, during the initial activation of the Toniebox and for each new Tonie character afterward, there must be a stable and secure connection to the internet.
Hence, the next most important thing to check is the connection status of your Toniebox as well as the quality of your internet.
Follow these steps to renew the internet of the Toniebox:
- Open the mytonies app on your mobile smartphone.
- Next, tap the “Collection” icon in the lower-right corner.
- Tap “Toniebox” and select your music box from the page.
- Select the Wi-Fi icon in the Toniebox’s managing screen.
- Pinch both ears of the unit until you hear an audio tone.
- Count to 10 once the LED of the box illuminates in blue.
- Pinch the ears again and tap “Continue” within the app.
- Pair your Toniebox with your phone and follow the steps.
Keep in mind that the Toniebox is currently unable to connect with 5 GHz.
Additionally, if the connection request fails, you could test the Toniebox on your smartphone’s hotspot network.
How to Detect Internet Issues with Toniebox?
If reconnecting your Toniebox did not restore the connection status, there could be a fault with your network setup.
If you’re facing issues on other devices as well, try the following steps:
- Perform a “power cycle” on the network router for 15 seconds.
- Check if the service cable of the router/gateway is plugged in.
- Reduce your bandwidth usage by reducing the paired devices.
- Shorten the distance between the Toniebox and the router unit.
- Restore the network settings of the router to the factory defaults.
Tip: Reach out to your ISP if you’re still experiencing issues or if there’s an orange lamp on the router or modem.
3. Check the Charging Level of the Toniebox
There’s an undisputed possibility that the reason why your new Tonie Character not working is because of a charging fault.
The Toniebox uses an in-built NiMH battery that comes along with the charging station, so the device can be moved around when at sufficient battery capacity.
If the LED lights aren’t green, it means that the Toniebox must be charged.
Position the unit on top of the base station and then wait until the light turns solid green before taking it off again.
The charging from 0% up to 100% may take anywhere between 2 and 4 hours!
How to Address Toniebox Charging Issues?
If the Toniebox refuses to charge or won’t respond at all, try the following:
- Ensure your Toniebox is securely plugged into the station.
- Power cycle the station by disconnecting it from the power.
- Connect the charging station to an alternative power outlet.
- Replace the adapter that’s connected to the base station.
Well, since the Toniebox’s cable is not detachable, an issue with the charging cable means that the entire charging station must be replaced.
Search for substantial damage to the cable and if any, consider purchasing a replacement charging station.
4. Check if the Tonie Character is Registered
If you receive the Tonie as a gift, and it won’t get activated with your account, there’s a strong possibility that the Tonie is still active in the previous owner’s account.
In such a case, there are two possibilities:
- You can either invite the owner into your household account.
- Have them deregister the Tonie, so it can be activated again.
How to Invite New Members to the Household?
- Open the mytonies app and tap on your profile icon.
- Tap the “Household” button from the settings category.
- Press on the red plus sign to invite the new member.
- Next, select “Invite Tonie User” or “Invite Full Member.”
- Type down the Tonie owner’s registered email address.
- After that, have the previous owner accept the invitation.
Once added, the new member can access the respective features of the Tonie household.
The character should automatically appear in the Tonie menu only if the invitation is successful.
How to Deregister Existing Tonie Characters?
- Go to “Collection” within your mytonies application.
- Select “Creative-Tonies” from the navigational menu.
- Tap on the Creative-Tonie picture you wish to remove.
- Press the Advanced Settings button on the bottom.
- Tap the “Remove from Household” button to proceed.
Now, the Tonie Character can be seamlessly associated with a new household by following the instructions in solution #1.
We also recommend reinstalling and updating the mytonies app to the newest version or checking if the Tonie was added through the official Toniebox website.
Note: These steps must be executed by the previous (existing) owner of the Tonie character!
5. Re-Add & Factory Reset the Toniebox
If neither of the solutions we have reviewed so far had any impact on the Tonie Character not working issue, we recommend a full reset of the Toniebox.
That includes removing the box from your mytonies account and then performing a factory reset to erase all settings and Tonies.
5.1 How to Remove a Toniebox From the Household?
- Tap “Collection” in the corner once in the mytonies app.
- Select the Toniebox you wish to remove from the profile.
- Go to “Advanced Settings” → “Remove from Household.”
- Follow the necessary instructions to remove the Toniebox.
5.2 How to Factory Reset a Toniebox?
- Connect the Toniebox with the charging station and wait.
- Turn the Toniebox while connected and pinch both ears.
- Release the ears after 10 seconds and the audio tone.
- Finally, complete the initial setup of the Toniebox device.
Once the Toniebox has finished the reset, re-add the unit to mytonies by pressing “Start Setup Process” within the app.
So, follow the on-screen steps to re-configure the Toniebox’s settings.
