Nanit Sound Not Working – Here’s How to Fix in Easy Steps!
Note: Have you eliminated all of the background noise from the baby’s room?
1. Check if “Nursery Audio” is Enabled
As unusual as it may sound, there’s a feature within the Nanit app that enables and disables the volume output of the camera.
If you’ve accidentally set the “Nursery audio” to “Off,” you will not hear any sounds from your baby’s crib or receive audio notifications on your smartphone’s app.
Note: The Nursery audio allows you to hear even the faintest noises produced by your baby, as well as be notified whenever there’s louder-than-usual audio.
Here’s how to ensure that “Nursery audio” is enabled for your Nanit:
- First, open the Nanit app and navigate to the “Settings” tab.
- Scroll down and locate the “Baby Settings” tab in the menu.
- Find the “Nursery audio” option under your “Sound” section.
- Verify the slider is set to “ON” and test the output of the Nanit.
In the “Baby Settings” tab, you can also access the “Microphone,” “Nature Sounds” and “Allow Cellular Data” features.
We recommend setting the “Microphone” feature to “On” so you can talk to your baby throughout the whole night.
Tip: You can check if the nursery audio is enabled by searching for the icon on the live screen!
2. Check Phone’s Volume & Mute Status
A simple yet essential thing when the Nanit sound not working is to check is if your phone’s volume is low or the “Mute” or “Do Not Disturb (DND)” is on.
For example, iPhones have a peripheral “DND” button on the side that when pressed will block all notifications from your Nanit app and mute your phone.
So, access the quick menu settings of your smartphone to check the volume level and ensure the device isn’t muted.
You can play sound from any audio source to verify that the smartphone is audible and not muted.
Also, Check for External Connections!
If you’ve recently used your phone with a Bluetooth speaker or a third-party device, chances are that all of your baby’s noises can still be heard through that device.
So, ensure your smartphone is not connected to any Bluetooth devices and preferably deactivate the “Bluetooth” feature.
3. Power Cycle the Nanit Camera Unit
We have discovered that a simple power cycle can be greatly effective if your Nanit camera’s microphone gets bugged or stops working suddenly.
A potential power deficiency can cause all sorts of issues with Nanit and by conducting a power cycle, you can reset glitching functionality.
Here’s how to perform a power cycle on the Nanit camera:
- Disconnect the type-C end of the wire from Nanit.
- Unplug the other end from the electrical wall outlet.
- Wait for 30–45 seconds while the unit discharges.
- Reconnect your cable on both ends and test Nanit.
How to Check Nanit for Power Issues?
If the Nanit camera is rebooting, powering off, or refuses to work properly, check the following in the device’s power supply:
- Ensure the power cord of Nanit is tightly connected.
- Connect the Nanit camera to a different power outlet.
- Remove third-party connections from the Nanit setup.
- Check if the power cord of the Nanit unit is damaged.
Note: It’s also important to ensure all segments of the camera’s stand are attached securely and the USB cable isn’t bent or pressed along the way.
4. Ensure the Nanit App is Up-to-Date
One of the possible causes why the Nanit camera sound not working is because of an outdated app firmware.
When you use an outdated app, there is a high chance of missing notifications, no sound, or other related problems.
Proceed with the quick instructions to update the Nanit app’s version:
- Open the Google Play or App Store on your smartphone.
- Tap on your profile icon and go to the installed apps tab.
- Next, locate Nanit and check if there’s an “Update” option.
- Tap the “Update” button to apply the latest app firmware.
If you haven’t had issues with the audio prior to applying the Nanit app’s firmware update, we recommend testing the app on another device.
Alternatively, you can reach out to the support.
Update your Smartphone’s OS Version!
Similar to the Nanit app, your smartphone may miss some dependencies for the application or important hotfixes that could cause issues with the app’s audio.
So, update your smartphone as well, based on your smartphone’s type:
- To update the OS on an Android, open the “Settings” and go to “System” → “Software Update” → “Update.”
- To update the OS on an iPhone, open “Settings” and go to “General” → “Software Update” → “Update Now” or “Automatic Updates – ON.”
Quick Note: Your phone must have a strong internet connection to update the firmware!
5. Restore the Camera to Factory Defaults
A proven solution to the sound on Nanit not working issue is to restore the camera to factory default settings.
There’s an in-built “RESET” button on the back of the camera, right next to the USB type-C port, and pressing it will reset the device’s configuration.
Note: Only proceed with the reset if you’re aware that all of the camera’s settings will be erased!
- Press and hold the “RESET” button on the camera for 10–15 seconds to start the reset.
Release once the LED indicator of the camera blinks in blue!
Once the reset has been initiated, it takes the Nanit camera anywhere between 1–2 minutes to finalize the reset.
Do not interact with the cam until the live feed within the Nanit app is restored.
6. Check if the Internal Speaker is Blown
If you’ve tried all of the steps so far, but the Nanit’s audio still isn’t working, there’s a strong likelihood of an internal speaker fault.
The speaker of your Nanit camera might have malfunctioned as a result of an electrical surge or prolonged overheating of the hardware.
Be aware that disassembling the Nanit camera will void your warranty, so if it is still active, it’s best to deliver the camera to a professional inspection.
Here’s how to access the hardware of the Nanit camera:
- Locate the seam in between the camera’s front and rear panels.
- Insert an opening pick or a sharp and thin object into the gap.
- Slide the opening pick all around the Nanit camera’s perimeter.
- Separate the front and rear cases to access Nanit’s hardware.
- Next, uninstall the 4mm T6 Torx screws from the plastic panel.
- Carefully lift the camera cover and remove the rubber gasket.
- Check for burn marks on the black camera panel circuit board.
Often, it would be difficult to tell if the camera has defected or not unless you have experience with microtechnologies.
However, if the speaker malfunctions as a result of overheating or a power surge, there will be obvious burn marks and a burning plastic smell.
