Proven Ways to Fix VTech Baby Monitor Temperature Wrong!

While VTech claims that the camera’s temperature sensor is ultimately accurate, the readings could be off by 1 up to 2 degrees at maximum. 

Hence, if the sensor’s readings do not match the temperature on your household’s thermostat for example by a lot, there could be a problem

1. Unplug & Power Cycle the VTech Setup

The first and most sensible thing to do is perform a power cycle on both the VTech camera and baby monitor.

If the fault is temporary and there isn’t an issue with the temperature sensor, then the power cycle will effectively resolve the issue. 

Let’s start with a power cycle on the baby’s camera!

1.1 How to Power Cycle the VTech Baby Camera?

The VTech camera uses a standard prong power cord and requires a stable power supply. 

Follow these steps to perform a proper power cycle:

1. Disconnect the camera’s adapter from the A/C outlet.
2. Wait for 60 seconds while the camera is unplugged.
3. Plug the VTech camera into an alternative A/C outlet.
4. Wait until the device starts up and test the temperature.

1.2 How to Power Cycle the VTech Baby Monitor?

Unlike the camera, the monitor does not require a stable power supply and has a rechargeable battery instead.

Nonetheless, there’s still a way to power cycle the device via a “forced” reboot:

1. Ensure the monitor is plugged in with the A/C charger.
2. Press and hold the “Power” button for 5–10 seconds.
3. Wait until the monitor’s screen fades out and powers off.
4. Turn on the baby monitor after 20–30 seconds and test.

Tip: Check if there are any type of power issues with either the camera or the baby monitor!

2. Check if the Camera is Overheating

Well, the heating conditions are the most important part of achieving an accurate temperature reading on your VTech camera.

First, the camera must be isolated from potential heat-emitting devices, and second, the room’s temperature must also be regulated to prevent overheating.

Because the VTech camera’s sensor is built-in, any excessive heat can elevate the temperature camera’s hardware and cause it to display inaccurate readings.

2.1 What Causes Overheating of the VTech Camera?

In most cases, the VTech camera may overheat due to either of the following reasons:

• Your camera is positioned in an enclosed space.
• There’s too much dust accumulation on the vents.
• A nearby heat conductor is transferring extra heat.

2.2 Clever Tips to Prevent VTech Camera Overheating:

To stop the VTech camera from overheating, try the following:

• Clean all of the VTech camera’s ventilation openings.
• Place the camera in a central and well-open position.
• Dislocate nearby heat conductors transferring warmth.

While there is no typical way of knowing whether the camera is overheating, laying your palm on either of the side panels should be enough. 

Note: If the camera’s plastic panel feels hot to the touch, you will know whether it’s overheating!

3. Adjust the Temperature Alert Settings

The VTech baby monitor temperature wrong readings might be a result of a misconfigured temperature alert.

Not assigning the correct minimum and maximum threshold values through the monitor’s settings may result in false readings or potential problems with your notifications.

Here’s how to adjust the “Temperature Alert” setting on VTech:

1. Press the “MENU” button while the VTech monitor is idle.
2. Use “UP” and “DOWN” to highlight the “Temperature” icon.
3. Press “SELECT” and choose “MIN” from the options’ menu.
4. Assign the minimum temperature threshold for the alert.
5. Go back and enter the “MAX” menu from the options page.
6. Assign the maximum temperature threshold of the alert.
7. Exit the menu and check if the monitor will respond properly.

Note: The minimum temperature for the alert can be set between 50°F (10°C) and 68°F (20°C), whereas the maximum can be between 72°F(22°C) and 99°F(37°C.)

4. Regulate the Room’s Temperature

Although this is standard practice, testing out the temperature sensor’s responsiveness requires regulating the room’s temperature as much as possible. 

So, based on the heating or ventilation equipment you use, we recommend testing between the lowest possible temperature of the alert, all the way to the maximum possible temperature.

Tip: We recommend taking your baby to another room while testing the temperature sensor!

How to Test Temperature Alert Threshold?

First, test the minimum value of the temperature threshold by increasing the cooling setting on your thermostat or heating appliance.

Then, use the baby monitor to track the exact value of the minimum threshold and determine if the temperature alert goes off.

If the monitor’s alert goes off exactly when your room’s temperature strikes the lower threshold, it means that the camera is sensing the temperature correctly.

If not, try to test with the highest heating setting instead, which matches the “MAX” threshold of the monitor temperature alert. 

5. Extend the Temperature Sensor (Older Models)

If the VTech baby monitor showing wrong temperature, it could be because of an improperly positioned external temperature sensor. 

The outer sensor or antenna uses an extendable cord to allow regulation of the position, and it’s recommended to stretch it as far from the camera as possible.

In some cases, the sensor might pick up the camera’s internal heat and transfer inaccurate temperature reading data to the monitor. 

Note: You must ensure the sensor is at least 2 fingers away from the camera’s body to verify the accuracy of the readings. 

6. Restore the VTech to Factory Defaults

If your VTech baby monitor is still showing wrong temperature readings, perhaps reinstalling the operating system might be the only solution.

The factory reset will delete all of your monitor’s settings as well as reset the connection with each of the set-up cameras, so keep that in mind. 

As the camera units cannot be reset individually, you must initiate the procedure through the baby monitor.

Here’s how to factory reset any VTech baby monitor easily:

1. Locate the reset pinhole right under the speaker gaps on the back.
2. Use a sim removal tool or a paperclip to insert it through the gap.
3. Hold the button for 5–10 seconds to initiate the factory restoration.
4. Wait until all of your monitor and camera’ settings are uninstalled.

Note: Once the reset is complete, you will have to set up the VTech baby monitor from scratch and reconnect each of the cameras.
