Ring Chime Won’t Flash Green? (Try These Simple Fixes!)

When the Ring Chime won’t flash green during setup, it could be failing to enter setup mode, which prevents it from connecting to the Ring app for pairing.
This issue is often seen with the Ring Chime (2nd Gen) and occurs due to power faults, Wi-Fi issues, or firmware glitches.
This guide offers expert solutions to resolve the issue, which ensure the Ring Chime works with your doorbell system to deliver audible alerts!
How to Fix When the Ring Chime Won’t Flash Green?
Note: The Ring application will not detect the Ring Chime unless it is flashing green.
Also, have you checked if the Ring Chime flashes any other color, such as blue, meaning that the Wi-Fi setup failed, or the indicator doesn’t light up at all?
1. Reconnect the Chime to the Outlet
An unstable power connection might prevent the Ring Chime from entering setup mode, as insufficient or fluctuating power can disrupt the startup.
Reconnecting the device to a reliable outlet can ensure it receives steady power to boot properly and display the green flashing light.
Here’s what to do:
- Unplug the Ring Chime from its current outlet and wait 10 seconds.
- Then, plug the Ring into a different socket with proven functionality.
After reconnecting, your Ring Chime should flash green if the power issue is resolved.
Don’t forget to use a direct outlet connection for the Ring Chime to avoid power supply issues.
2. “Simple” Reset the Ring Chime OS
A software glitch might be preventing the Ring Chime from entering setup mode and keeping it in an unresponsive state.
So, a manual reset can reboot the operating system of the chime by clearing minor firmware issues and prompting the green flashing light needed for initial setup.
Locate the Reset button on the side of the Ring Chime (2nd Gen), press and hold it for ~15 seconds, then release when the front light starts flashing.
Note: The indicator could be potentially green, blue, or another color at first, but wait for a few moments to see if the green flashing light appears, indicating setup mode.
3. Check for Changes in the LED Behavior
If the Ring Chime shows a blue flashing light or another indicator instead, it might already be registered and attempting to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
Observing the LED behavior and adjusting the connection settings in the Ring app can help establish the Ring Chime application connection.
Here’s how to check if the chime is already registered:
- Open the Ring app and go to the main dashboard.
- Tap the three dots (•••) on your Ring Chime device.
- Access the Device Settings menu from the page.
- Select Device Health, then tap Change Network.
- Pick Change Wi-Fi Network and follow the steps.
Attempting to “initially” set up the Ring Chime after it has already been registered will be unsuccessful in every scenario.
The green indicator only appears during the setup, meaning that once your chime’s profile appears in the app, you won’t see that indicator again.
That is, unless the chime is reset to defaults!
4. Check for Wireless (RF) Interference
If your Ring Chime is not flashing green during setup, wireless interference is certainly among the prime causes.
Devices like microwaves, cordless phones, or thick walls can cause RF interference and block the chime communication with the router and app.
- Move the Ring Chime closer to your Wi-Fi router during setup.
- Turn off nearby devices like microwaves or Bluetooth speakers.
- Avoid placing the Ring chime near metal surfaces or thick walls.
After minimizing interference, your Ring Chime should flash green and connect.
Keep ALL other wireless devices outside of a ~30–45-foot radius from the Ring Chime during and after setup.
5. Use an Alternative Device for Setup
The issue might be with the device you are using for setup, as compatibility problems between the Ring app and certain phones can be present.
- The absence of the green indicator also means that the Ring Chime is not recognized by a nearby mobile device that’s compatible for setup.
Switching to a different device can bypass these app-related issues and allow the Chime to connect successfully to your Wi-Fi and display the green flashing light.
Use an iPhone or iPad instead of an Android:
Some users found that the Chime wouldn’t connect using Android devices, but succeeded with an iPhone or iPad:
- Borrow an iPhone or iPad temporarily if you’re using an Android.
- After that, download the Ring app on the iOS device and log in.
- Reconnect the chime from the electrical outlet for ~15 seconds.
- After that, follow the Ring app instructions to connect the Chime.
Note: Check if the Ring app on your Android or iOS device is up-to-date and clear the cache, or offload if you are on an iPhone or iPad.
6. Attempt a “Complete” OS Factory Reset
A “deeper” factory reset might clear persistent software issues with the Ring Chime, as it forces the device into setup mode by resetting the OS.
This method ensures the Chime starts operating from “scratch” and addresses any persistent firmware glitches along with other software errors.
- Hold the Reset button on the side of the Ring with a paperclip.
- While holding the button, plug the Chime into a power outlet.
- Continue holding the button for 15 seconds after plugging it in.
- Release the button and wait for the Chime to enter the setup.
Alert: Do not disconnect or connect the chime before holding the Reset button for 15 seconds!
7. Troubleshoot Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues
Well, even if your Ring Chime won’t flash green, a blue flashing light indicates a Wi-Fi issue in the connectivity, meaning the device is failing to connect over Wi-Fi.
Adjusting phone settings, rebooting your router, and re-adding the Chime can resolve all types of Wi-Fi issues and restore the connection of the Chime.
Note: The solutions below are only applicable if the Ring Chime is already registered in the Ring app, but fails to connect or function as intended.
7.1 Adjust Phone Settings for Setup
The settings of your phone might interfere with the connection of the chime!
On your phone, disable mobile data, enable Location Services for the Ring app, and, if using Android, go to Settings → General Management → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
This will erase all wireless settings on your phone and allow you to set up the chime initially.
7.2 Reboot the Wi-Fi Router
An issue with the router and network can prevent the chime from establishing a connection and cause it to blink blue.
Unplug your router, wait ~30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for all network services to reboot.
7.3 Re-add the Chime to the Ring App
If the Chime was previously connected, it might require a fresh setup.
Open the Ring app, go to Devices, select your Chime, tap Remove Device, confirm removal, then re-add it by tapping the “+” icon.
Don’t forget to select “Chime” as the device type, otherwise, it will be registered under another section, with different functionalities.
7.4 Test with a Different Wi-Fi Network
Temporarily connect the chime to a different network, like a mobile hotspot or guest Wi-Fi, through the Ring app’s Change Network option in Device Health and check for the green light.
Note: If you’re still unable to set up your Ring chime, get in touch with Ring customer service for more assistance.
