 1. Verify Detection is Enabled

If the Ring Doorbell is completely skipping events, the “Motion Detection” setting might be fully disabled, which is why no events are being captured.

Without this feature enabled, your doorbell is basically blind to motion, leaving you in the dark. 

Here’s how to enable motion detection on Ring Doorbell:

1. Open the Ring app on your phone.
2. Tap the three dots next to the unit.
3. Choose “Settings” from the menu.
4. Activate the “Motion Detection” tab.

The Motion Detection should now be live, and your Ring doorbell shouldn’t miss important activity.

2. Increase Motion Sensitivity

If the Ring Doorbell is constantly missing events, the motion sensitivity may be too low, allowing movements to slip by.

This setting tweaks how quickly your device is to spot motion, ranging from “Minimum” (super picky) to “Maximum” (catches everything). 

So, if the motion detection slider is near the “MIN” mark, subtle movements will not trigger any event.

So, sliding it to the “MAX” will increase the sensitivity and make your detection sharper.

Here’s how to increase the sensitivity on your Ring Doorbell:

1. Go to the “Motion Detection” tab.
2. Find a slider with MIN & MAX labels.
3. Tap and move the slider to the right.
4. Set it to over 65%, just before MAX.

That’s it. You can now test whether your doorbell will continue to skip events, and if it is, simply go back in the detection menu and increase the sensitivity to over 80%.

3. Adjust the Detection Zones

So, even when the Ring Doorbell’s “Motion Detection” is on and the sensitivity is high, missing events may be due to a misconfigured “Detection Zone”.

If a detection zone has been added and pointed to aim in a quiet corner instead of the walkway, you’ll miss pretty much everything.

The solution is to simply reshape those zones and verify that your Ring Doorbell is looking for action in the right spot.

There are 2 steps you need to undertake–adding and/or editing!

Add a Motion Zone:

• Open the Ring app dashboard.
• Tap on the doorbell’s three dots.
• Navigate to “Motion Settings.”
• Tap the “Camera Motion Zones”.
• Then, select “Add Zone” to start.
• Drag the points to shape the area.

Edit a Motion Zone:

• Head back to “Motion Settings.”
• This time, press on “Edit Zones”.
• Select a detection zone to adjust.
• Adjust it and reshape boundaries.

The most important thing here is to ensure that the detection zone is focused on the busy area in front of your doorbell.

If you think that the detection zones are causing your Ring doorbell to skip events, simply disable the detection zones altogether.

Note: The detection zones allow you to narrow down your events by skipping moving vehicles and focusing on your walkway for human movements.

4. Set Up the Doorbell Modes

Well, if your Ring is missing events, you might have configured the “Mode” settings wrongly, which determines when your device is watching and when it is not.

There are a few different doorbell modes that you can configure, such as Disarmed, Home, and Away, using your phone’s location to adjust the camera’s activity. 

So, for example, if your Ring Doorbell is skipping events only when you’re home, it means that the device is instructed not to record when you’re home.

The same goes for when you’re away, so if you detect such a pattern in the problem you’re facing, then the “Mode” is your culprit.

Here’s how to configure the Ring Doorbell “Modes” for 24/7 detection:

• Open the app and go to the dashboard.
• Tap the three dots next to the doorbell.
• Head to “Settings,” then “Mode Settings.”
• Turn on “Modes” and tweak “Disarmed”.
• Enable recording for Disarmed mode fully.
• Save, then configure “Home” mode next.
• Enable the recording for Home mode too.
• Save, then also set up the “Away” mode.
• Ensure recording for the Away mode work.

Now, with Disarmed, Home, and Away all recording motion, it will not matter whether you are at home or away–your doorbell will always capture events. 

Note: If you believe that this is causing the event’s problem, just disable the “Modes” altogether!

5. Verify the Doorbell is Online

If your Ring Doorbell keeps missing events, the problem may be occurring because the doorbell goes offline right when the action happens. 

An offline doorbell can’t see or tell you when an event is happening, so you need to check the status in the application and confirm the doorbell is online.

Here’s how to reconnect your Ring Doorbell to the Wi-Fi:

• Hold the Setup button for 10 seconds.
• Then, open your Ring app dashboard.
• Tap three dots and head to “Settings”.
• Go to “Settings, and “Device Health.”
• Select “Change Network” to proceed.
• Then, choose a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
• Enter the password, and wait to join it.

1. Locate the orange button on Ring 1 back.
2. Locate the orange button on Ring 2 front.
3. Press and hold the button for ~15 seconds.
4. Observe when the doorbell light will flash.

When the light flashes, the Ring doorbell will begin factory resetting. Wait patiently until the reset is over, and then set up the device from the application.
