If your Echo Pop not responding to your vocal commands, there are a few things to attempt!
When you say “Alexa” or your preset wake word, the ring on your Echo Pop should illuminate in a blue color, which means that the speaker is listening.
So, if the light ring does not light up in a blue color after saying your wake work, Alexa is not listening, so stick with us to find out why.
Here’s why your Echo Pop is not responding:
If you’re unsure how any of these is done, read the in-depth instructions!
How to Fix When Echo Pop Not Responding? (8 Easy Steps)
Note: Have you tried saying “Alexa” loudly and clearly right in front of the Echo Pop speaker?
1. Check your Echo’s *Wake Word*
The wake word is the word you use to trigger the listening of your Echo Pop, as well as on any Echo speaker.
This word can be changed, and if that’s the case, the Echo Pop speaker will not respond to the default wake word “Alexa.”
Here’s how to check or change the wake word of your Echo:
- Open the Alexa app and go to Devices.
- Then, locate and select your Echo Pop.
- Tap on Settings, which is the cogwheel.
- Then scroll down and tap “Wake Word.”
- Check or change the Echo’s wake word.
When you are ready, exit the Alexa app and try narrating the wake word loudly and clearly to test the responsiveness of your Echo Pop.
2. Unmute your Echo Pop Speaker
If you are seeing a red light on your Echo Pop, then your speaker has been muted and the unit will not respond to any of your commands.
To unmute the Echo Pop speaker, find and press the Mute/Unmute button on the top, which will disable the red light and unmute the device.
If the Echo Pop is unmuted, the light ring shouldn’t be illuminated in any color and must stay off.
However, if you see no red light, but Echo Pop is not responding, keep reading!
3. Increase the Echo Pop’s Volume
Perhaps your Echo Pop is in fact responding, but you simply can’t hear the response because the volume is set to the lowest option (1).
So, there are two ways of increasing the volume of your Echo Pop:
- Say “Alexa” (or wake word) “Set volume to 7” or “Volume 7”
- Press the Volume (+) button on the top of the Echo speaker.
If you start hearing the beep upon pressing the button, then the volume of your Echo Pop is way too low, and that’s why you weren’t hearing the responses.
4. Use the Built-In Echo Pop Speaker
If your Echo Pop not responding to voice, perhaps your speaker is configured to use a different output device such as a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth speaker.
To resolve such inconvenience, you need to reach into the Alexa application’s settings and verify to set your Echo to use the built-in speaker.
Here’s how to set your Echo to use its built-in speakers:
- Open the Alexa app and head to “Devices.”
- Then, find and select the Echo Pop speaker.
- Tap the cogwheel, that is “Device Settings.”
- Under “Connected Devices” tap “Speaker”.
- Verify that the “Built-in speaker” is checked.
When you are ready, test if your Echo Pop speaker will respond when you say the wake word!
5. Soft-Reset the Echo Pop Speaker
By now, we’ve made sure that all the settings of your Echo Pop speaker are correct and there is no actual reason for the device’s unresponsiveness.
Hence, the next step is to forcefully reboot the system by unplugging the device from the power outlet for about 50–60 seconds for a cycle.
So, straightforwardly disconnect the speaker from the power outlet. Wait for 60 seconds and then reconnect the device back.
You should see a slowly pulsating teal and blue color, which means that the Echo speaker is currently loading up the operating system.
Note: If you see no light upon reconnecting your speaker to the outlet, try a different and tested outlet with a direct connection (no strips, dividers, extenders, etc…).
6. Reconnect Echo Pop to Alexa App
In some rare cases, the unresponsiveness of your Echo Pop speaker comes due to a bugged or glitched connection with the application.
If your speaker can’t communicate with the Alexa app, upon narrating your wake word you will likely hear an automated response or no response at all.
So, one of the most effective steps would be to unpair and pair your Echo Pop to the Alexa app!
Here are the detailed instructions to reconnect Echo Pop to Alexa:
- Open the Alexa App and go to Devices.
- Find and select your Echo Pop speaker.
- Tap the cogwheel to unveil the settings.
- Scroll down to find the “Registered To”.
- Tap and confirm you want to Deregister.
- Next power cycle the Echo Pop speaker.
- Then, go back into the Alexa application.
- Go to “Devices” and tap (+) “Add Device.”
- Then, choose the Amazon Echo option.
- Press “Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop, and more”
- Follow the on-screen steps to add the Echo.
When ready with the setup of your Echo Pop, say “Alexa” to check if your speaker will respond.
7. Optimize Wi-Fi Network Connection
If your Echo Pop is not responding, the next step is to verify that your Wi-Fi is accessible, since when the speaker is offline you will hear an automated response:
- “Sorry, I am having trouble connecting to the internet”
So, here is exactly what to do to ensure your Wi-Fi is online:
- Connect to the Wi-Fi by using your smartphone.
- Try to surf the web and access various websites.
- If you can’t access sites, power cycle your router.
- If Wi-Fi is online, move Echo closer to the router.
- Switch your Echo from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
How to Change the Wi-Fi Network on Echo Pop?
- In the Alexa app, navigate to “Devices.”
- Find and select the Echo Pop speaker.
- Then, tap on the cogwheel (Settings).
- Tap “Change or remove a Wi-Fi network”.
- Choose “Join another Wi-Fi network.”
- Lastly, follow the on-screen instructions.
Note: When selecting a Wi-Fi network (if you have a dual-band) router, make sure to choose the one that has “2.4” in its name.
8. Reset the Echo Speaker to Default
If your Echo Pop simply won’t respond to anything you say, and the bluish light doesn’t appear, maybe you need to factory reset the speaker.
Warning: This method will erase all settings on your speaker permanently, and revert the device to its factory default state.
Here’s how to factory reset your Echo Pop speaker in easy steps:
- Verify the Echo Pop speaker is connected to power.
- Locate the Microphone and Volume Down buttons.
- Hold both buttons simultaneously for 〜20 seconds.
- Wait for the light indicator to turn OFF and ON again.
- Your Echo will automatically enter the “Setup Mode.”
- You can now pair your Echo Pop to your Alexa app.
That’s it. Echo Pop is now reset, and when you pair it to the app, the speaker should respond!
Note: If your speaker is still not responding, you may be dealing with a defective microphone or another hardware-related problem.
