homepod mini keeps disconnecting

HomePod mini keeps disconnecting again, and again, and you’re starting to get frustrated?

We understand how frustrating this must be, so we’ve created this guide to help out everyone with the same disconnection problem.

We’ll walk you through a few quick and effective steps, Some of them include:

  • Optimization of your Wi-Fi network
  • Removing and re-adding HomePod
  • Disabling the Private Wi-Fi Address
  • Use the 2.4 instead of 5 GHz Wi-Fi
  • Reset the HomePod mini to defaults

Let’s get started!

HomePod mini Keeps Disconnecting – Here’s How to Fix!

Note: Have you tried rebooting your Wi-Fi router?

1. Optimize the Wi-Fi Connectivity

optimize the wi-fi connectivity

If your HomePod mini is frequently disconnecting from the Wi-Fi, chances are that the issue comes from the network.

There are countless possibilities, ranging from the distance, Wi-Fi, frequency strength, network router settings, and more…

So, we’ve prepared a quick list of things to try immediately!

How to Inspect Wi-Fi Connection?

Use your smartphone to connect to the same Wi-Fi as your HomePod. Then stay at the exact same spot where your HomePod is placed and try to surf the web.

If you can’t notice any lag, delay, or slowdowns, go to Online Ping Tool, type “8.8.8.8“ under the “IP address or hostname” field, and start pinging.

This is Google’s DNS (8.8.8.8), and you should immediately start to receive responses!

  • If internet is good: 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=1 ttl=119 time=5.09 ms
  • When dropping out: Connection Timed Out

If you receive a couple of these responses, followed by several “Timed Out”, this means that your Wi-Fi is dropping out, hence that’s why the HomePod is disconnecting.

Note: If you successfully ping for more than 5 minutes, then jump straight to solution #2.

How to Optimize Wi-Fi Connection?

Here are a few steps to optimize a Wi-Fi that is dropping out/disconnecting:

  • Disconnect unneeded devices from your Wi-Fi.
  • Dislocate any wireless devices and electronics.
  • Straighten up the Wi-Fi network router antenna.
  • Put the Wi-Fi network router closer to the ceiling.

The most important thing is to shorten the distance between the router and HomePod.

2. Remove & Reconnect HomePod

Sometimes when the HomePod mini is experiencing networking errors, it’s best to remove the device from the app and add it again.

This will not only refresh the system, but if it works, it will spare you advanced troubleshooting.

remove & reconnect homepod

Here’s how to remove HomePod from the Home app and re-add it:

  1. First, open the Home app on the iPhone/iPad.
  2. Select the HomePod mini you wish to remove.
  3. Then go to “Settings” and “Reset HomePod”.
  4. Finally, tap “Remove Accessory” to remove it.

Don’t worry, this will only remove your HomePod from the app and will not reset the device to factory defaults.

When ready, restart your HomePod mini and keep your iPhone or iPad close to the device to begin the setup process in the Home app.

Note: If you have more than one Wi-Fi network, try connecting your HomePod mini to the other available network by going to Settings → Move HomePod mini to [Network Name].

3. Set Private Wi-Fi Address to OFF

If your HomePod mini is frequently unpairing and disconnecting from the Wi-Fi, without a proper reason, the issue may come from a feature called Private Wi-Fi Address.

To explain this option as concisely as possible, let’s say that devices on the network contain a constant MAC address.

set private wi-fi address to off

So, with the Private Wi-Fi Address enabled, each device is assigned a different and unique MAC address for security purposes.

However, this may cause some devices to disconnect.

  • To disable the Private Wi-Fi Address for your HomePod mini, on your iPhone open Settings → Wi-Fi → HomePod mini (i) Info → Private Wi-Fi Address → OFF.

Note: This may deliver a privacy error on your screen, but don’t worry–your network is safe, there is no risk since this is your own network.

4. Use the 2.4 GHz NOT 5 GHz Wi-Fi

In case you’ve got a dual-band router and your HomePod mini keeps disconnecting from WiFi, perhaps you’re connected to the faster, but not that reliable 5 GHz Wi-Fi frequency.

  • Well, the HomePod supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

That is great because if you have the HomePod in the same room as your network router, you can enjoy insane Wi-Fi speeds.

use 2.4 ghz not 5 ghz wifi

But, in case you keep the HomePod in another room than your router, we highly recommend switching to the 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi since the signal is stronger.

Yes, the 5 GHz is faster, but you don’t need fast internet with the HomePod mini. You need a connection that doesn’t disconnect every 5 minutes.

So, here’s how to change the Wi-Fi of your HomePod mini:

  1. Enter your Home app on your Apple device.
  2. Select the HomePod mini for Wi-Fi changes.
  3. Go to “Settings” → “Move HomePod mini”.
  4. Then, select the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi router band
  5. Insert the Wi-Fi password and connect to it.

That’s it. Now check whether your HomePod will continue to disconnect. If yes, keep reading!

5. Factory Reset the HomePod mini

If nothing works, and your HomePod mini keeps disconnecting from the Wi-Fi, regardless of what you try, it’s time for a factory reset.

Warning: This method will unpair your HomePod mini from the app, reset ALL personalized settings, and revert everything to default, irreversibly!

Here’s how to factory reset HomePod mini in 4 straightforward steps:

#1 Remove Your HomePod mini:

The first step is to remove the HomePod mini from the Home app by following the steps in solution #2.

#2 Restart your HomePod mini:

Unplug the HomePod from the electrical outlet for about 10 seconds and then connect the adapter back in.

#3 Begin the Factory Restoration:

Wait 10 seconds and touch the top of your HomePod using your finger, holding until the white ring turns red.

#4 Finalize the Factory Restoration:

You can lift up your finger after Siri announces the reset, and you hear three consecutive beeps.

When you’re ready with the factory reset, set up your HomePod mini again, connect it to the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi of your router, and test.

If nothing works, just keep the HomePod closer to the router.

Note: If you believe that something with your HomePod is wrong, and that’s why it disconnects, maybe you should get in touch with Apple customer service.

HomePod Keeps Disconnecting From Apple TV – Why?

Your HomePod mini keeps disconnecting from your Apple TV for the same reason–your Wi-Fi.

If either your Apple TV or HomePod mini is losing connection to the Wi-Fi, the communication between them will drop, hence they will disconnect.

To avoid such issues, we recommend keeping your Wi-Fi router in the same room as your TV and HomePod, which will guarantee a perfect connection.

One More Thing!

personal hotspot mobile

You can try sharing a personal hotspot from a third-party smartphone and establishing the setup once again just to check whether the entire fuss is coming from the Wi-Fi.

Well, if the HomePod mini keeps disconnecting, even with a different Wi-Fi, it’s probably a hardware-related issue.
