Why is Blink Mini Camera Not Powering On? (Quick Fix)

We know how bothersome it can be when your Blink Mini camera not powering on, and you don’t know where to start.
Don’t worry–your camera is probably not dead. The problem could be something simple, such as an unstable electrical connection, a Sync Module outage, or an app issue.
However, you should be mindful if the Blink Mini camera has experienced overheating or if it has been recently exposed to any type of hardware damage.
What Blink Mini Camera Is Telling You?
You should start by checking the camera’s indicator light:
Light Colour | Meaning |
Red steady light | The camera is not connected to the internet or completed setup |
Red blinking light | The cam is setting up, has a low battery, or doesn’t detect motion. |
Green steady light | The cam is connected, or the recording is temporarily disrupted. |
Green blinking light | The camera’s internet is weak, or it cannot sync with the cloud. |
Blue steady light | The Blink camera has connected to the internet successfully. |
Blue blinking light | The Blink camera is ready to be added or prepared to record. |
If your camera has no LED | The device has failed to turn on and there’s a problem with the power supply. |
Hence, let’s learn how to restore Blink Mini’s power supply!
How to Fix When the Blink Mini Camera Not Powering On?
Note: Follow the steps consecutively!
1. Unplug Blink Mini & Sync Module
You should start with something simple, such as performing a power circulation on the Blink Mini camera and the Sync Module simultaneously.
If the camera falls out of the module’s range, fails to verify the Wi-Fi connection, or can’t be recognized by the system, it may turn OFF or reboot.
1.1 How to Power Cycle the Blink Mini?
Unlike other Blink camera models that use non-rechargeable batteries, the Mini series uses a 5-volt, 1-amp standard USB power through a type-C connector and adapter.
So, the camera turns off right after its power cord is unplugged or if the power flow is disrupted.
To power cycle the Blink Mini:
- Unplug the camera’s USB from the adapter.
- Unplug the adapter from the electrical outlet.
- Reconnect the equipment after ~60 seconds.
1.2 How to Power Cycle the Sync Module?
The Blink Mini also doesn’t need a Sync Module to work, but it can still connect if there’s one existing in your system.
The Sync Module power cycles the same as the camera:
- Unplug the module power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait for a total of 60 seconds, and then reconnect.
In the meantime, while your device is unplugged, inspect the condition of your connections and the power adapters.
Look for any type of damage that could indicate a problem with the camera.
2. Shorten the Sync Module’s Distance
To operate the Blink Mini camera requires a defined range within the Sync Module if one is present in the setup.
So, positioning your devices far apart could lead to inconsistent motion detection, capturing problems, and even issues with the power.
Hence, ensure the Blink Mini camera is within 50–100 feet from the Sync Module for quality and high-performance connection.
Eliminate any obstructions between the devices and ensure no other wireless devices are communicating over the wireless frequency in between.
Note: Only proceed with this step if there’s a Sync Module in your setup!
3. Change Blink Mini’s Power Source
The Blink Mini camera is intended only for indoor use and connects with the outlet over a USB type-C wired connection.
So, a potential outlet insufficiency or an improper connection of the equipment could cause Blink to reboot repeatedly or suffer a total power loss.
How to Identify an Outlet Fault?
So, if you are uncertain whether or not the outlet has sustained damage, try connecting another device to the camera’s source and observe the behavior.
You could also use a multimeter to measure the positive pole’s voltage output and determine if it falls within the 120V- 240V range.
Symptoms of a failing or failed power outlet typically include:
- No voltage readings on your multimeter.
- Problems with the connected appliance.
- Bad physical appearance or loose frame.
- Buzzing noise near the outlet or the device.
All of those could indicate a serious issue with the outlet that must be inspected by a qualified technician as soon as possible.
Warning: Using a defective outlet in your home could result in a short circuit and even fatal damage to the installation.
4. Re-add Blink Mini from the App
The Blink mobile app could have something to do with why the Blink Mini camera won’t turn on, even when it’s connected to the power.
We recommend re-adding the camera’s device profile from the Blink app installed on your phone to restore Blink’s functionality.
Based on whether the camera is online or offline, there are two removal methods:
- If the camera is online: Open the Blink app and go to “Camera Settings” → “General Settings” → “Blink Mini” → “Delete Device”.
- If the camera is offline: Open the Blink app, then press on the “Warning” message of Blink and press on the “Delete” tile below.
- To re-add the camera: Open the Blink app and press on “Add device” at the top, then follow the on-screen instructions.
The Blink will warn you immediately if there’s a problem with the camera that disrupts the motion detection or recording.
You can then tap on the push alert received from the app and delete the camera’s profile right away to re-add it later.
5. “Shock” the Blink Mini Camera
In some cases, a light tap on the rear compartment could dislodge a stuck component, which has caused Blink to lose power.
Don’t forget, the tap doesn’t have to be hard to relocate the component, as long as you tap the correct place.
Try tapping several different spots on the back of the camera while the product is connected to power.
Keep a close eye on the indicator and determine if any of the light signals will appear.
6. Replace your Power Equipment
Malfunctioning power equipment is the leading cause of the Blink Mini camera’s sudden outage.
So, replace each of the charging equipment’s components (the adapter and USB) to determine which one has stopped working.
- To install a different USB for Blink, disconnect the power adapter from the outlet, unplug the USB cable, and install a compatible replacement.
- To utilize an alternative adapter, unplug the adapter from the outlet, disconnect the USB cable, and then install the new adapter.
Note: Test the camera both after replacing the USB cable and the power adapter!
7. Check Blink for Overheating
Some users report that unplugging the Blink Mini camera for a few hours may help reduce the internal temperatures when the camera is overheating.
Many others also refer to this as “allowing the camera to rest”, especially if it has entered emergency mode due to overheating.
How to Identify & Resolve Overheating?
Overheating is often associated with several factors, such as a hot camera panel, buzzing compartment noise, and a genuinely warm A/C adapter.
All of these could indicate that the Blink Mini needs to be unplugged for a continuous time.
There are several practices to prevent Blink from overheating:
- Position the camera away from heat sources.
- Prevent direct sunlight from flashing on Blink.
- Clean the Blink Mini camera from dust/debris.
All of these tips should contribute to keeping the camera’s temperature stable. So, to stop the overheating immediately, unplug the camera for at least 10–15 minutes.
Pro Tip: We recommend leaving the camera unplugged overnight if overheating is detected.
8. Upgrade Blink Mini’s Firmware
The camera’s sudden outage could also mean that the product’s firmware is either outdated or corrupted.
Fortunately, you can access and upload the latest updates available for the camera through the Blink app.
Here’s how:
- Open the Blink app and tap on the camera icon.
- Next, scroll down from the camera’s homepage.
- Press on the “Firmware” setting if it is available.
- Wait until the camera starts the update process.
Below the “Firmware” setting, you can see the camera’s current version.
- Don’t forget that Blink Mini needs to maintain a secure connection to the internet to update.
9. Restore Blink’s Default Settings
A factory reset could address most of the issues with the camera, especially when the Blink Mini camera is not powered on.
So, locate and press the “RESET” button on the rear panel of your camera for roughly 15–20 seconds.
The button sticks out, so it’s easy to notice!
Warning: The camera must be connected to power during the reset.
As a result of the factory reset, the camera will power off and remain inactive for 60 seconds.
If your camera shows no sign of life, even holding the “RESET” button chances are a HW defect.
