The disconnections are often caused by:
It’s 100% of these three possibilities–even if you have already tried some basic troubleshooting!
Stay with us, and let’s fix this right now!
How to Fix When the Owlet Cam 2 Keeps Disconnecting?
Note: Does the Owlet camera disconnect immediately after it is paired or after several minutes?
1. Update the Owlet Cam Wi-Fi Details
Perhaps, you mistyped the Wi-Fi password or selected an incorrect hostname during the initial Wi-Fi setup of your Owlet Cam 2.
So, the first step is to update the Wi-Fi details of your camera and verify that the connection with the network router is secure.
Follow these steps to update the Wi-Fi of your Owlet Cam 2:
- Open the Owlet application and navigate to the homepage.
- Locate the “Owlet Cam Settings” tab in the settings section.
- Tap the gear icon and select “Wi-Fi” from the settings below.
- Tap the Wi-Fi button to allow Owlet to search for a new Wi-Fi.
- Wait for approximately ~10 seconds and re-select the Wi-Fi.
Once the application has identified all nearby Wi-Fi networks, tap on the network you originally wanted to pair with the camera, verify the hostname is correct, and carefully type the password.
Once you are done, tap the “Connect” button and check if the Owlet camera pairs successfully.
2. Power Reset your Owlet Camera 2
The power reset is a quick and effective solution for any temporary problems with your camera functionality and Wi-Fi connectivity.
So, before advancing with the more complicated solutions, we recommend performing a power reset on the Owlet Cam 2 to discharge the power supply.
All you have to do is unplug the camera for at least ~30 seconds to entirely drain the power supply and eliminate non-lasting issues with the functionality.
3. Test Camera on a Different Band
Note: Proceed only if you have a dual-band router that works on 2.4 & 5 GHz.
The second-gen Owlet cameras are compatible with dual-band routers, thus they can work with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
Thus, if your Owlet camera has been unable to connect using the 2.4 GHz band more than once, we recommend trying it with the 5 GHz band instead.
Go back to solution #1 to update the Wi-Fi details for the Owlet Cam 2, but this time, select the corresponding threat and use the correct password.
Reminder: Keep in mind that if you use 5 GHz to connect the camera, the camera must be placed closer to the router than with 2.4 GHz.
4. Shorten the Wi-Fi Signal Distance
If the Owlet Camera manages to connect once, but loses connection quickly after, the issue can be distance-related.
So, we recommend positioning your camera as close to the network router as possible after reestablishing the Wi-Fi connection.
So, for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, the camera needs to be within a ~150-foot range from the router, and for 5 GHz, it needs to be closer, at about ~100 feet.
5. Check & Resolve Network Issues
I remember having the same problem in the past, asking myself, “Why does my Owlet camera keep disconnecting?” and then it occurred to me–a networking issue.
One way or another, an outage of the network services or an issue with the router could cause your Wi-Fi to go down and disconnect the Owlet camera as well.
So, here are several tips to verify the functionality of the Wi-Fi network:
Tip: If the network issues persist for other devices on your network, make sure to get in touch with the ISP as soon as possible.
6. Reconfigure the Router GUI Settings
Particular settings in the router’s GUI could repeatedly disconnect the Owlet camera shortly after it establishes a connection with either of the wireless networks.
So, the next step is to adjust some essential settings for the wireless channels of your Wi-Fi router through the web interface.
To access the Router GUI:
- Open the CMD on your connected PC or laptop and type “ipconfig” below.
- Copy the default gateway value of your network router from the IP results.
- Open a web browser and paste the default gateway to access the interface.
- Use admin/admin or admin/password to sign in to the GUI of the router.
- Alternatively, check the sticker on your router or try this–http://192.168.0.1/.
Note: The router will have a different interface based on the provider and manufacturer.
Now, adjust the following settings in the router GUI;
Note: Reboot the router after applying the new settings to ensure they take effect.
7. Reinstall the Owlet Mobile Application
A potential fault with the mobile application could cause the Owlet camera to disconnect halfway through the setup.
So, the next step is to reinstall the Owlet mobile application on your Android or iOS phone to address issues with the Wi-Fi setup of your Owlet camera.
The Owlet application is available for Android and iOS in the Google Play Store or App Store!
Note: Uninstalling the app will erase all associated devices, settings, and networks.
8. Test the Owlet Cam 2 on a Mobile Hotspot
The easiest way to identify if the issue is with the router equipment or the camera itself so to test the Owlet on your smartphone’s mobile hotspot.
The only difference between setting up the mobile hotspot on Android and iOS is the activation of the hotspot feature itself, so let’s walk you through!
Note: Verify your smartphone’s mobile/cellular data is enabled and there is sufficient Mbps left.
Here’s how to pair the Owlet camera to your smartphone hotspot:
- Activate the hotspot on your Android or iPhone device in the settings.
- Assign the hotspot a different name to distinguish it from other Wi-Fi.
- Now, set a password and choose WPA/WPA2 encryption for security.
- Follow the instructions in solution #1 to update the Owlet Cam details.
You must keep your smartphone 10–15 feet from the camera during testing.
If the camera fails to connect with the mobile hotspot as well, then the issue is certainly with the Owlet equipment, so let’s proceed with a factory reset…
9. Reset the Owlet Cam 2 to Factory Defaults
So, if all else fails, and the Owlet Cam 2 keeps disconnecting, then it is undoubtedly time for a factory reset.
This process will completely reinstall the operating system, erasing system bugs and glitches, providing you with a fresh start without disconnections.
⚠️Warning: This process clears all configurations along with any underlying errors, allowing the camera to be initialized from scratch.
Here’s how to reset the Owlet Cam 2 to its defaults in easy steps:
- First, locate the Reset button on the back panel of the camera.
- Hold for ~15–20 seconds until you see “Resetting, please wait”.
- Release the button when the Cam announces “Ready to pair”.
- Proceed with initial pairing through the Owlet mobile application.
