Are you dealing with the Denon receiver no picture but sound problem? Keep reading further!

Uninterrupted video broadcast is required to configure most of the Denon receiver’s settings and have quick access to the device’s audio management menu.

If the audio of your Denon receiver seems to be working fine, but the picture is not there, we suggest attempting the following steps:

  • Check if your AVR model supports video conversion.
  • Ensure the TV is selected to the correct input source.
  • Check the wiring setup of the Denon receiver and TV.
  • Disable the “HDMI-CEC” feature of the connected TV.
  • Restore the Denon receiver to factory default settings.

Well, continue reading for a detailed guide to these solutions!

How to Fix the Denon Receiver No Picture But Sound Issue?

Note: Have you tried performing a power cycle on both the Denon receiver and TV?

1. Check for Video Conversion Support

check for video conversion support

The higher-tier Denon receivers support the so-called analog to HDMI “Video Conversion” feature, allowing you to input an analog video source and output a source at an HDMI level.

So, if you’ve never checked whether the AVR supports the video conversion, but still used an HDMI cable in the setup, there won’t be any video output, besides the audio.

1.1 Which Denon AVRs Support Video Conversion?

Before we go on and review the steps to set the proper video transfer equipment, here’s a list of the video conversion-enabled Denon receivers:

Older Models: AVR-1912, AVR-1913, AVR-2112/2113/2312/2313/3312/3313/4520CI, AVR-A110, AVR-E400, AVR-S900W, AVR-S910W, AVR-X2000, AVR-X2100W, AVR-X2200W, AVR-X3100W, AVR-X3300W, AVR-X3000, AVR-X3200W, AVR-X3400H/X3500H/X3600H, AVR-X4100W, AVR-X4000AVR-X4200W.

Newer Models: AVR-X4300H/X4400H/X4500H/X4700H, AVR-X5200W/X6200W, AVR-X6300H/X6500H/X6700H/X7200W/X7200WA, AVR-X8500H, AVR-X8500HA.

Tip: You can check the model of your receiver in the user manual or delivery packaging!

1.2 How to Set up an Analog to Analog Video?

If your receiver does not support the video conversion feature, the Denon receiver no picture but sound issues will occur.

Well, unless both the input and output share the same cable type.

For instance, if you have a third-party system connecting over a composite (or component), you must connect the AVR with the same cable type to your TV or projector.

1.3 How to Set up an Analog Video Conversion?

set up an analog video conversion

If the AVR is video conversion-enabled, then you don’t have to worry about using any different cables.

You can connect any type of external device to your AVR and still use an HDMI cable to plug the receiver into the TV’s interface.

2. Correct the Selected TV Source

The video broadcast of the AVR is designed for the user to access and set up the receiver’s audio settings.

However, not setting the connected TV or projector to the correct input mode will prevent the Denon receiver’s broadcast from appearing on the screen, leading to no picture.

2.1 How to Correct HDMI Video Input On TV?

correct hdmi video input on tv

If you’ve connected the receiver over HDMI and made sure it supports video conversion, then press the “Input” or “Source” button on the TV’s remote.

Then, check the exact HDMI input of the AVR receiver and use the “OK” or “Select” button on your remote to lock in your selection.

2.2 How to Correct Analog Video Input On TV?

If the AVR receiver does not support video conversion, and you’re using an analog connection, ensure all of the cables are connected securely and access the TV’s “Source” menu.

Then, you must identify the exact type of analog cables used in Denon’s setup and set the TV to the correct “Component” or “Composite” input.

3. Inspect the AVR & TV’s Cable Setup

If you’re still unable to overcome the Denon receiver no video output hurdle, we recommend going through all cables in your AVR and TV setup.

3.1 How to Troubleshoot Denon AVR Cable Setup?

If the AVR’s cable equipment appears to be defective, try the following steps:

  • Verify the component cables are securely connected.
  • Check the power adapter cable of the Denon receiver.
  • Check if the secondary video player HDMI is secured.
  • Check if each of the components is in the correct port.

3.2 How to Troubleshoot TV Cable Setup?

If the video fault is with the TV, you need to look for the problem with the HDMI interface!

So, try the following steps to detect issues with the TV’s cable setup:

  • Check if the HDMI is plugged securely on both ends.
  • Plug the HDMI or component cables to another port.
  • Update the TV’s firmware to the most current version.
  • Remove third-party splitters or third-party connectors.
  • Check if the HDMI cable is not damaged or defective.

Reminder: Keep in mind that if you’ve plugged the HDMI cable into a different input, you would need to change the selected source on the TV.

4. Disable “HDMI-CEC” in the TV’s Settings

disable hdmi-cec tv settings

While the “HDMI-CEC” (Consumer Electronics Control) feature is exceptionally convenient for some users, it could still cause compatibility issues.

That’s why we recommend temporarily disabling the “HDMI-CEC” of your TV to test the Denon receiver’s video output and the picture.

How to Deactivate “HDMI-CEC” On Popular Models?
SamsungPress the “Menu” button on the remote and go to “Settings” → “System” → “HDMI-CEC.” Set all three options from the menu to “Off.”
SonyOn the TV, go to “Settings” → “Channels & Inputs” → “External Inputs” then select “BRAVIA Sync Settings.” Access “BRAVIA Sync Control” then → “Device Auto Power Off” → “OFF.”
LGOn the LG TV< go to “All Settings” → “General” → “Devices” → “HDMI Settings” then “Simplink (HDMI-CEC).” Set it to “OFF.”
HisensePress “Menu” on the remote, then go to “Settings” → “System.” Select “HDMI-CEC” → “Device Auto Power” → “OFF.”
TCLAccess the “Settings” tab then “Display and Sound.” Highlight “HDMI-CEC” and press the activation slider to enable or disable it.
PhilipsPress “Home” and go to “TV Settings” → “Installation” → “Preferences” → “EasyLink” → “OFF.”

Tip: If your TV model wasn’t listed above, consult the user manual for detailed instructions!

5. Factory Reset the Denon Receiver

If you’re still unable to restore the Denon receiver’s video broadcast, we recommend restoring the default settings configuration of the receiver.

Since most Denon AVR models have different reset instructions, we recommend checking with the manual for the exact steps.

There are over 50 unique models, so the steps may not work.
