PS5 Not Getting Full Internet Speed? (Boost Speed Now!)
We know how frustrating it is when your PS5 not getting full internet speed, only for you to be downloading a game for hours, when your true internet potential can get in less than 5 minutes.
Don’t worry–this quick guide will help you measure your internet speed, compare it with the PS5 speed, and show you the best methods to equalize it.
The guide is quite advanced, so buckle up and let’s get started.
How To Test Your Broadband Speed?
The first thing to do, before troubleshooting the internet connection of your PS5, is to test your broadband speed to determine the actual speed you have.
You should then compare it to what you’re paying for and determine if you receive what’s promised by your internet service provider.
The broadband speed can only be measured from a device directly connected to the router via Ethernet cable, which in most cases is your main computer.
There are numerous free websites allowing you to measure your internet speed (e.g, download and upload), to understand the speed your router is working with.
Then, note down the findings.
⚠️Important: You should also measure the speed of your Wi-Fi by using a wirelessly connected device, since the low speed could be from your Wi-Fi, not your PlayStation 5.
How to Test PlayStation 5 Internet Speed?
The next step is to test the internet speed that your PS5 is receiving, regardless of whether it is connected over Wi-Fi or Ethernet to your router.
This way, you can compare the speed on your directly-connected computer to the PS5’s internet speed, so you can identify if there is an issue.
To test the speed on PS5, go to “Settings” → “Network” → “Test Internet Connection” and look for the “Connection Speed (Download)”.
Then compare. If they don’t match, perhaps the wireless connection limits the network speed!
⚠️Important: If you’re paying for, let’s say, 1 Gbps internet speed, but your wireless router supports up to 200 Mbps Wi-Fi speed, there is no way to wirelessly achieve 1 Gbps on your PS5.
PS5 Not Getting Full Internet Speed – Fixed in 6 Easy Steps!
Note: Have you tried rebooting your Wi-Fi router and PlayStation 5 for ~60 seconds?
1. Shorten the Wi-Fi Signal Distance
The distance between your Wi-Fi router and PlayStation 5 is the main reason why the console can’t get the full internet speed of your broadband.
Sadly, if your router and PS5 are not in the same room, there isn’t much you can do but shorten the wireless distance by relocating your devices.
You can start with simple steps, such as trying to point the router’s antennas towards the PS5 location, or move the router as high as possible.
Well, if this doesn’t work, the only way to increase the wireless network speed of your PS5 is to perform a general relocation by shortening the proximity.
2. Use the Faster 5 GHz Wi-Fi Thread
Note: Skip this step if your router is not dual-band and does not transmit 2 different networks!
The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only supports up to 450 Mbps or, in some cases, 600 Mbps, while the 5 GHz band supports up to 1.3 Gbps.
So, if your broadband speed is beyond 400/600 Mbps, and you’re using the 2.4 GHz band of your Wi-Fi, you will never be able to reach the full potential.
The best way would be to switch to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi and test if your PS5 internet speed slows down or increases.
Here’s how to switch the Wi-Fi network on your PS5:
- From the main menu, go to “Settings”.
- Then, navigate to the “Network” pane.
- Choose “Set Up Internet Connection”.
- Select the 5 GHz Wi-Fi of your router.
- Type in the corresponding credentials.
The downside here is that if your router and PS5 are not in the same room, switching from the 2.4 to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi might have a negative impact.
So, the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, even if slower, is much more reliable in terms of signal strength than the 5 GHz Wi-Fi, which can’t reach far out.
It won’t hurt to try, though. If it’s too laggy on the 5 GHz Wi-Fi, there are other things to try!
3. Adjust the PlayStation DNS Settings
The DNS (Domain Name System) is your PlayStation’s way of translating website names into addresses, which directly affects how fast the console responds.
When the DNS server of your PlayStation 5 is slow, the console may not load anything, experience delays, and produce severe lag.
If you, however, connect to a proven DNS server, such as Google’s or Cloudflare’s, this lag will immediately disappear and improve PS5 internet speed.
To switch the DNS server on your PlayStation 5, go to “Settings” → “Network” → “Set Up Internet Connection” → “Advanced Settings” → “DNS Settings”.
Then you must choose “Manual” and set it up as follows:
DNS Supplier | Primary DNS | Secondary DNS |
8.8.8.8 | 8.8.4.4 | |
Cloudflare | 1.1.1.1 | 1.0.0.1 |
OpenDNS | 208.67.222.22 | 208.67.220.220 |
Quad9 | 9.9.9.9 | 149.112.112.112 |
AdGuard | 94.140.14.14 | 94.140.15.15 |
Feel free to try whether the network speed of your PlayStation 5 improves when you switch to different DNS servers.
If not, stick with the most popular Google DNS and continue reading…
4. Enable Router’s *Quality of Service*
The Quality of Service (QoS) feature of your router can automatically detect certain activities on your connected devices and provide more speed when needed.
Such activities include gaming, streaming, or downloading, which is perfect for connected devices such as your PlayStation 5.
To enable the QoS, you’ll need to enter your router’s settings!
#1: How to Enter the Router’s Control Panel:
First, you’ll need a machine (phone or PC) connected directly to your router (not via Wi-Fi).
To enter your router’s settings, you can first try this link or this link, and if it doesn’t work, check the Default Gateway address on your router’s sticker.
This address goes into the URL bar of a browser and opens up the login page, where you can sign in using the default router details.
Note: The default router login details are typically admin/admin or admin/password.
#2: How to Enable your Wi-Fi Router’s QoS:
Linksys | QoS (or Media Prioritization) | Configuration → Applications & Gaming → QoS (or Media Prioritization) → Enable QoS |
NETGEAR | Dynamic QoS or QoS | ADVANCED → Setup > QoS Setup → Enable QoS (or Dynamic QoS) → Setup QoS Rule |
TP-Link | QoS (or Bandwidth Control) | Advanced → QoS (or Bandwidth Control) → Enable QoS → Enter ISP speeds |
ASUS | Adaptive QoS (or Game Boost) | Adaptive QoS (or Game Boost) → Enable QoS → Select Gaming/Custom |
#3: How to Set Highest Priority for your PS5:
Now that the QoS on your Wi-Fi router is enabled, don’t exit the GUI just yet and acquire your PS5 MAC Address from the “Settings” → “System” → “Console Information”.
Then insert the MAC Address, so your router knows which device to prioritize, and click the “Save” button below.
Now run an internet speed test on your PS5 to check whether the speed has improved.
5. Restart PS5 After Each “Rest Mode”
If your PS5 is not getting full internet speed Ethernet (wired), a certain limitation of the PS5 Rest Mode could be capping the speed of your internet.
When the PlayStation 5 enters “Rest Mode”, everything, including power consumption, network speed, and processes, is reduced to a minimum level.
What we’ve discovered here at ZontSound is that after waking up your PlayStation 5 from Rest Mode, the network limitation keeps going until a restart.
So, if you haven’t restarted your PS5 since the last time the console has been in Rest Mode, maybe that’s what is limiting the speed.
Note: If you have a replacement Ethernet cable to test with, go ahead and connect your router’s LAN port to the Ethernet port of your PS5 and run an internet speed test.
6. Set a Static IP Address for your PS5
Your PS5 is not getting full internet speed, despite everything you’ve tried? It’s time to try to bypass the default DHCP of your router and console.
By setting up a static IP address dedicated to your PlayStation 5, you can easily remove any delay on your internet speed by resolving IP conflicts.
Well, right now, your router is probably supplying your PS5 with an IP automatically, via DHCP, which can often cause severe delays.
To set a static IP address for your PS5, follow the steps below:
Step #1 – Acquire the Needed Addresses
You’ll need a PC or a MAC, connected to your router directly via Ethernet cable!
Step #2 – Manually Configure the PS5 Network
On your PS5, go to “Settings” → “Network” → “Settings” → “Set Up Internet Connection” → “Wired LAN” → “Advanced Settings”.
Then, change “IP Address Settings” from “Automatic” to “Manual”.
Finally, set the addresses as follows:
Note: Feel free to leave the other options as they are, and test your PS5 network speed now.
