PS5 Turns On By Itself At Night? (Try This Quick Fix!)
We know, it’s weird, right? The PS5 turns on by itself at night, only to find the console working every morning.
Another just as weird occasion is your PS5 turning on as soon as you enter the room–sound familiar?
If either of these issues occurs, then you’re not alone, and we’ll solve this!
The reasons why your PS5 turns on automatically range from settings such as HDMI Link to potential power problems, voice commands, or the PS5 Media remote.
Let’s help you diagnose and fix the issue!
PS5 Turns On By Itself At Night – Solved in 7 Effective Steps!
⚠️ Important: Connect your PS5 directly to the wall, without third-party devices such as strips and extenders, as they might be responsible for power fluctuations.
1. Disable the HDMI Link Feature
The HDMI Link feature, also known as “HDMI-CEC” on your PlayStation 5, allows you to turn on your connected TV when you power on the console.
The thing is that this option also allows the TV remote to interact with the PlayStation 5, potentially turning on your console all of a sudden.
The recommendation here is to disable the HDMI Link, along with the “Enable Power Off Link” feature, to ensure that nothing is interacting with the console.
To disable the HDMI Link on your PlayStation 5, go to “Settings” → “System” → “HDMI” and disable both “Enable One-Touch Play” and “Enable Power Off Link”.
⚠️Important: You also need to disable the HDMI-CEC settings on your connected TV.
Brand: | Feature: | How to Disable HDMI‑CEC: |
Samsung | Anynet+ | Go to Settings → General → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI‑CEC). |
Sony | BRAVIA Sync | Head to Settings → Watching TV (or Channels & Inputs) → External Inputs → BRAVIA Sync settings → BRAVIA Sync. |
LG | SIMPLINK | Go to Settings/All Settings → General (or Connection) → Devices/Device Connection Settings → SIMPLINK |
Panasonic | VIERA Link | From the Menu → Setup (or System) → HDMI Control (or VIERA Link) |
Vizio | CEC | Go to Settings (or System) → CEC |
TCL | CEC | Go to Settings → System → Control other devices (CEC) |
Hisense | HDMI Control | Head to Settings → Inputs (or Inputs → HDMI control) |
Note: If you don’t see your TV brand here, check online or consult the user manual.
2. Deactivate the PS5 Media Remote
So, if the PS5 turns on when you walk into the room or in the middle of the night, the conclusion that the community has come to is that the PS5 Media remote causes this unexpected behavior.
If you’re using a Media remote, simply eject the batteries and test whether your PS5 will turn on by itself when the remote has no power and no functionality.
If this truly stops your PlayStation 5 from turning on without a reason, this immediately justifies the suspicion.
According to some users, replacing the PS5 media remote batteries has solved the problem, but for many other users with the same issue, that has not stopped the turning on.
The PS5 media remote uses 2 x AA batteries, and to get to the battery compartment, you may need to use a knife to gently open it up.
Note: We recommend using only high-quality batteries such as Energizer or Duracell.
3. Disable the PS5 Voice Commands
If replacing the batteries on your PS5 Media remote did not solve the problem, you may need to disable the voice control of your console.
While it’s just a speculation, many users claim that the PS5 Media remote is “always listening” and often powers on the console automatically.
So, if your PS5 turns on automatically when you enter the room, then the problem is definitely related to your voice inputs and the Media remote.
Here’s how to disable the voice inputs on PlayStation 5:
From your PlayStation 5 home screen, go to “Settings” → “Voice Command (Preview)” and disable the following:
With both features disabled, you can insert the batteries in your PS5 Media remote and test if your PlayStation 5 turns on automatically.
If not, try to enable the “Voice Commands” feature, but still keep “Listen for Hey PlayStation” disabled to check if the issue persists.
If not, this way you can continue using voice commands, but your PlayStation 5 won’t turn on by itself.
4. Configure PS5 Rest Mode Features
When the PlayStation 5 is in a low-power state (Rest Mode), certain networking features can wake up your console and turn it on automatically.
Luckily, you can prevent networking tasks such as downloads or updates from waking your PS5 when in Rest Mode through the settings.
Here’s how to prevent your PS5 from waking up due to networking:
- From the main screen, navigate to “Settings”.
- Choose “System” and go to “Power Saving”.
- Enter the “Features Available in Rest Mode”.
- Stop “Enable Turning On PS5 from Network”.
This will prevent potential network-related tasks from automatically turning on the PlayStation 5 when in Rest Mode, which might just solve your problem.
Quick Tip: You can also disable “Stay Connected to the Internet”.
5. Turn OFF the DualSense Controllers
When your PS5 randomly turns on when the TV is off, it could be due to a false signal from your DualSense controllers while the console is in Rest Mode.
As you probably know, whenever the PS5 is in Rest Mode, it’s enough to press the PlayStation button on a connected DualSense controller to wake up the machine.
Therefore, if something is pressing this button, or there is something unusual with the controller, this might be your culprit.
The best way to exclude this possibility is by turning OFF your DualSense controllers by holding the PlayStation button for ~10–15 seconds.
Then, test whether your PlayStation wakes up by itself. If yes, then something with the controller is causing all this fuss.
Well, the best way to avoid this, until you get a new controller, is to avoid using “Rest Mode” and just turn off your PlayStation 5 completely.
6. Update your PlayStation 5 Firmware
If you’ve reached that deep into the guide, we’re now starting to suspect potential operating system issues that could be acting up.
If your PlayStation 5 keeps turning on by itself, make sure to update the firmware and ensure you’re running the latest PS5 operating system.
To update your PS5, verify that you’re connected to the internet and navigate to “Settings” → “System” → “System Software” → “System Software Update and Settings”.
If this doesn’t solve your issue, there is one last thing to try!
7. Reset your PlayStation 5 to Defaults
So, if you still can’t figure out why PS5 turns on by itself at night, or simply at random, you will need to reinstall the operating system.
Also known as “factory reset”, this is your last resort fix.
⚠️Warning: The factory reset erases everything from your PS5 permanently!‘
Here’s how to factory reset your PlayStation 5 in easy steps:
- From the main screen, navigate to the “Settings”.
- Then, choose “System” → “System Software”.
- Go to “Reset Options” → “Reset Your Console”.
This will factory reset your PS5 and hopefully resolve the issue!
