PS5 No Sound Through TV – Fixed in 9 Guaranteed Solutions!
Note: Try to soft reset your TV and PS5 by unplugging them from the wall for ~60 seconds.
1. Unmute the TV and PlayStation
The first thing to do is to ensure that your TV and PlayStation 5 are not muted.
1.1 – Unmute your TV
Grab your TV remote and look for a button with a little speaker icon that has a slash through it. That’s usually the mute button.
Then press this speaker button, and you should see a small icon pop up on your TV screen, letting you know the mute status of your TV.
1.2 – Unmute your PS5
If your PlayStation 5 is silent, pick up your DualSense controller and find the “MUTE” button (it’s often right below the PS button).
Press and hold it for a second. This should toggle the audio for both the PS5 and the controller’s microphone.
2. Increase the TV and PS5 Volume
The next thing to do is increase the volume on both your TV and PlayStation 5.
2.1 – Increase TV Volume
To increase your TV volume, grab the remote and press the Volume (+) button several times to verify that the volume is at least 75%.
2.2 – Increase PS5 Volume
To increase the PlayStation 5 volume, go to “Settings” → “Sound” → “Volume” and drag the sliders to the right to crank up the volume.
3. Configure the PS5 Audio Output
If you can’t hear audio from the TV your PlayStation 5 is connected to, perhaps your PS5 is told to output the audio from a different device.
In that regard, you must go to “Settings” → “Sound” → “Audio Output” and make the needed changes.
3.1 – Set the TV As the Output Device
The first thing to do is instruct your PlayStation 5 to which exact connected device you want the sound to be transferred to.
You’ll see different options based on how many output devices you have connected to your PlayStation 5, including TVs, Soundbars, Headphones, Speakers, etc.
HDMI Device (TV) | Select this if you want your PS5 audio to go through your TV. |
HDMI Device (AV Amplifier) | Choose this option to send the audio to your soundbar/receiver. |
USB Headset | Select this option to send the audio to your USB headphones. |
Controller Headset | Choose this if you have a headset connected to the controller. |
Bluetooth Audio Device | Select this option if you have an unofficial Bluetooth adapter. |
As self-explanatory as it can be, choose “HDMI Device (TV)”, so the sound from your PS5 goes to your TV speakers.
3.2 – Stop the Output Auto-Switching
While you’re still in the “Audio Output” menu on your PS5, we recommend disabling the option “Switch Output Device Automatically”.
In short, this option will automatically switch the output of your console, as per the currently connected device.
Well, if this option has been disabled for all these types, you should also see what happens if you enable it and whether the sound will come back.
4. Adjust your TV’s Default Output
The TV also has “Audio Output” options. So, if you have devices connected to your TV, the audio may be transmitted to them instead of the built-in TV speakers.
You can check the back side of your TV for any devices that are connected over HDMI, AUX, or RCA.
Then, if you want those devices connected, you must specify the exact audio output you would like to use.
Based on your TV model, you must go into the settings and instruct your TV to output sound from the “TV Speakers”.
Samsung | Settings → Sound → Sound Output → TV Speaker |
LG | All Settings → Sound → Sound Out → TV Speaker |
Sony | Settings → Sound → Speakers → TV Speakers |
TCL | Settings → Audio → Audio output → TV Speakers |
VIZIO | Menu → Audio → Audio Output → TV Speakers |
These menus and settings may not perfectly align with the actual menus based on the latest firmware of your TV at the time of reading. |
Note: If the steps in the table do not align, or you don’t see your TV brand, check online, or consult the user manual.
5. Switch PS5 Audio Output Format
If you’re using a very old TV, connected over HDMI to your PS5, you should know that some modern audio output formats, such as Dolby or DTS, can’t be decoded.
That’s why a quick fix would be to change the digital audio output format of your PS5 to the default “Linear PCM”.
To change the audio output format of your PS5, go to “Settings” → “Sound” → “Audio Output” → “Audio Format (Priority)” → “Linear PCM”.
If you still can’t hear audio through your TV, test each available audio output format to test which of them your TV will be able to decode.
If none work, just leave it to “Linear PCM” and move on.
6. Unplug Everything from TV & PS5
If you’re still wondering why PS5 has no sound coming through the TV, the problem could be related to a connected audio device that is interfering.
The best way to deal with this would be to just disconnect all your connected devices.
Keep unplugging everything until only the PS5 and TV power cables and the HDMI are connected.
Tip: Keep all third-party devices disconnected until the end of the guide!
7. Troubleshoot the HDMI Connection
The next thing to inspect is the HDMI cable connecting your TV and PlayStation 5.
If your cable is worn out or the connectors are bent/corroded, there’s a high chance of facing audio problems.
What you need to do is to unplug the HDMI and check the following:
- Whether the HDMI connectors are wiggly/loose.
- If the cable’s body is ripped, exposing the wiring.
- If the PS5 and TV HDMI ports are not obstructed.
Note: If you have a replacement HDMI cable to test with, go ahead and test it now to verify that the problem is not related to the original cord.
8. Try to Switch to Another HDMI Input
A typical TV offers up to 3 HDMI input ports, allowing you to connect your PlayStation 5 to any of them and test whether the audio will appear.
There should be one HDMI port on the side and 2 more HDMI ports on the back of the TV, each of them labeled HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or HDMI 3.
Try to connect your PlayStation 5 to another HDMI port on your TV (preferably on the back), and then switch the input source of the connected TV.
To switch the input source, press the “Source” or “Inputs” button on your remote control and select the TV port your PS5 is plugged into.
Note: Verify you’re not using the HDMI (ARC) port of your TV, which is designed for audio devices!
9. Test via Different Output Television
If you have another TV or a monitor with built-in speakers that supports HDMI connection, you can connect your PS5 and test whether the audio will work.
This will instantly reveal whether the issue comes from your console, HDMI cable, or the original TV.
If you hear no sound through your secondary TV, this shows that the PS5 could be having a HW defect, which is the worst-case scenario.
