Yamaha Receiver No Sound From Speakers? (Fix in Minutes!)
Yamaha receiver no sound from speakers? Don’t worry, and continue reading this guide!
If the speaker is plugged in with your Yamaha receiver and is refusing to output audio, the issue is often related to the connections, the speaker configurations, or your receiver’s power supply.
Fortunately, there’s an abundance of solutions to try:
Proceed with the guide to learn how to apply each of these solutions!
How to Fix Yamaha Receiver No Sound From Speakers?
Note: Check if the “Max Volume” setting in the receiver’s menu is set to a sufficient value and ensure you haven’t muted the device or lowered the volume using the remote control.
1. Power Reset the Yamaha Receiver
As the Yamaha speakers get their power supply from the receiver, the first and most important solution is to power reset the configuration.
The procedure involves temporarily suspending the power supply of the Yamaha receiver and waiting until all of the residue electricity discharges.
Follow these steps to power reset the Yamaha receiver:
- Press the “Power” button on the right side of the face panel.
- Wait until the display goes blank and the receiver powers off.
- Unplug the power jack from the back of the Yamaha device.
- Disconnect the other end from the power-supplying outlet.
- Wait for a total of 60 seconds while the device is unplugged.
- Reconnect the power adapter back into the Yamaha receiver.
- Wait until the Yamaha receiver starts up and test the device.
Note: Wait for at least a minute until the receiver starts up and check if the speakers respond to playing music through your connected TV or computer.
2. Inspect the Speaker Connections
So, one of the primary reasons for no sound Yamaha receiver is an issue with the speaker’s connections.
Unlike a traditional amplifier, all Yamaha speakers use the bare positive and a bare negative wire that must be secured around the respective pole on the back of the device.
Based on the amount of speakers you have and whether you’re looking to create a 2:1, a 5:1, or a 7:1 surround sound system, each speaker must be connected to a specific input.
Warning: Before working, unplug the receiver’s power adapter and hold the “Power” button for 10–15 seconds to ensure all of the electricity is drained.
2.1 How to Connect Speakers for a 2:1 Setup?
A 2:1 setup involves a subwoofer paired with a “Left” and “Right” speaker.
All you have to do here is ensure the subwoofer is plugged in securely with the back of the receiver and identify the “Front Left” and “Front Right” inputs on the Yamaha unit.
Now, loosen the holder on the respective black and red inputs, tie each of the speaker’s wires around the pole, and tighten the holder.
Ensure the exposed section of the wire is secured and doesn’t touch with the negative or positive wire of the same speaker.
2.2 How to Connect Speakers for a 5:1 Setup?
Unlike the 2:1 setup, here you get a center speaker as well as two back speakers called “Back Right” and “Back Left” respectively.
Once you’ve positioned each of the speakers where they have to be, carefully lead them through your living room or office until they’re in close proximity to the receiver.
Identify each of the wire sets to the speaker they belong to and carefully tie them around the respective input on the back of the receiver.
2.3 How to connect Speakers for a 7:1/7:2 Setup?
- If your Yamaha receiver has over 5 inputs, it is typically considered an 8K Channel receiver and one of the highest-quality amplifiers out there.
Here, you have all of the speakers in the 2:1 and 5:1 configurations, plus an extra 2–4 speakers for front or rear surround positioning.
Tip: Sticking a numbered paper tape to each of the speaker cables helps identify them during the setup!
3. Adjust “Speaker Configuration” Settings
If the physical setup of the Yamaha receiver is in good condition, the next step is to inspect the software part or more accurately, the speaker configuration.
Simply connecting the speakers with the correct virtual input does not guarantee that the output will start working automatically.
Here’s how to access and adjust the Yamaha speaker configuration:
- Ensure a TV or a monitor is plugged with Yamaha’s HDMI.
- Press the “Setup” button on the Yamaha remote control.
- After that, press “OK” while the “Speaker” tile is highlighted.
- Navigate to the “Configuration” tab in the speaker settings.
Now, adjust the following settings:
- Set the “Subwoofer” tile to “<Use>”
- Set the “Front” tile to “Small”
- Set the “Center” tile to “Small”
- Set the “Surround” tile to “Small”
- Set the “Crossover” tile to “110Hz”
- Set the “Subwoofer Phase” tile to “Normal”
Note: The settings may differ based on the receiver model and amount of speaker inputs.
Important: Set “EQ Select” to “Off”
Well, messing with the equalizer settings without knowing what each of the frequencies impacts on the sound output may lead to a temporary sound loss.
Hence, using your Yamaha receiver remote, go back to “Speakers,” enter the “Equalizer” tab, and set the “EQ Select” to “OFF.”
4. Check the AV Routing of the Inputs
One of the reasons why the Yamaha receiver has no sound from speakers is because of a problem with the AV routing.
Not allowing your speaker signal to pass through the amplifier or output through the TV could lead to consistent issues with the output.
Here’s how to adjust the AV routing of the Yamaha receiver:
- Press “Setup” on the remote and navigate to “HDMI.”
- Disconnect all other third-party devices from the TV.
- In the “HDMI” menu, scroll down to “TV Audio Input.”
- Use the “Left” and “Right” buttons to cycle the inputs.
- Now, test the TV’s output on each of the HDMI options.
How to Conduct a “Test Tone” On a Yamaha Receiver?
After each adjustment to the AV configuration, you can test the functionality of each speaker by pressing “Setup” on the remote and navigating to “Speaker” → “Test Tone.”
This will cause all properly connected speakers to produce a tone and let you know if there are underlying issues.
5. Restore the Receiver to Factory Defaults
If you still wonder why does Yamaha receiver have no sound, we recommend performing a factory reset on the Yamaha receiver.
The procedure lasts for approximately 1–2 minutes and erases all settings and configurations on your Yamaha receiver.
Follow these steps to perform a factory reset on the receiver:
- Wait for 10–15 minutes until the Yamaha receiver enters standby.
- Hold the “Straight” and “Power” button on the receiver’s front panel.
- Now, press the “Right Program Arrow” until “INIT-CANCEL” appears.
- Wait for the receiver to turn off and erase all settings within the system.
Note: We recommend disconnecting each of the speakers after unplugging the device from the power supply and reconnecting them, while the device is resetting.
