Ecobee Doorbell Keeps Going Offline – Proven Ways to Fix

Note: You can check the status of the Ecobee doorbell through the mobile app.

1. Unplug Your Router & ecobee

unplug your router & ecobee

Let’s start with something simple. There’s a great chance that your ecobee doorbell has run into a temporary issue that could be or not be concerning the Wi-Fi router.

Hence, it’s best to power cycle both of the devices to ensure there are no underlying problems.

1.1 How to Power Cycle ecobee Doorbell?

The Ecobee Video Doorbell is strictly hardwired, and the power cycle consists of two steps:

Step #1 Circuit breaker:
  • Locate the circuit breaker in your home and push the dedicated switch of the doorbell system towards the “Off” side.
Step #2 Terminal wiring:
  • Detach the doorbell’s faceplate from the mounting plate, then untie the chime’s wires from around ecobee’s terminals.

After reinstalling the terminal wiring of the doorbell, restore the power at the circuit breaker and wait for Ecobee to start up.

1.2 How to Power Cycle a Network Router?

The network router’s power cycle is simple:

  1. Optional: Press the “Reset” button on the router.
  2. Unplug the router’s power adapter from the outlet.
  3. Wait 30–40 seconds while the router is unplugged.
  4. Reconnect the router’s power adapter to the outlet.
  5. After the router starts up, check the ecobee’s status.

While the router is unplugged, check if there’s any damage inflicted on the power equipment and test the electrical outlet with another appliance.

Note: Avoid using external connectors, smart plugs, or power extenders in the router’s setup!

2. Force Stop the ecobee App

The Ecobee application may have developed a problem as a result of a recent firmware update, corrupt data, or even device-level problems.

Before trying anything else, we recommend force closing the app and removing it from the temporal memory on your Android or iOS device.

force stop the ecobee app
  • If you’re on Android, press the “Home” button and swipe upward to remove the ecobee app from the device’s temporary memory.
  • If you’re using an iPhone, pull the home button line upwards and left/right, then swipe on the ecobee app to remove it from memory.

Note: Wait for several seconds and relaunch the ecobee app after ensuring your smartphone maintains a stable connection to the internet.

3. Shorten Ecobee’s Distance

Unlike other doorbell products, the ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera requires an existing doorbell installation and can connect with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks.

So, ecobee might be losing connection due to distance insufficiency, especially if you are using the 5 GHz thread.

shorten ecobee’s distance
  • The 2.4 GHz frequency carries less data but covers up to 150 feet and can travel through twice as many solid surfaces in comparison to the 5 GHz.
  • The 5 GHz frequency carries much more data but covers less area in comparison to the 2.4 GHz thread and may experience issues traveling through walls.

So, measure the distance (roughly) between the ecobee’s current installation position and the network router, then determine which Wi-Fi frequency would cover the distance requirements.

How to Change ecobee Doorbell’s Wi-Fi?

  1. Open the Ecobee app, then go to “Menu” → “General”.
  2. After that, navigate to “Settings”, then press on “Wi-Fi”.
  3. Tap on “Network,” and ecobee will re-scan for networks.

Note: Now, select the 2.4 GHz (or 5 GHz) Wi-Fi’s correct SSID from the list and input the Wi-Fi password. Tap on “Connect” and allow for ecobee’s Wi-Fi to be changed.

4. Troubleshoot your Network

troubleshoot your network

The problem could be with the Wi-Fi network, especially when the ecobee doorbell offline status appeared suddenly.

Well, there are several different solutions for all types of problems with the wireless network that will help you identify whether it’s the router, service, equipment, or the ISP.

Here are several unique solutions for network issues:

  • Power cycle the network router’s hardware
  • Reduce the overall usage of Wi-Fi/network
  • Temporarily disable your Wi-Fi’s dual-band
  • Set your network to “WPA2” or “WPA2 & 3
  • Reset the network router/modem’s options

If other devices connected to your network are also experiencing slowdowns, consider getting in touch with your internet service provider for more details.

5. Reinstall your Ecobee App

A problem with the app might be the reason why your doorbell keeps losing coverage.

Whether the app has corrupted data, has outdated firmware, or cannot function properly on your phone, a clean reinstallation should help.

reinstall your ecobee app
  • Locate the ecobee app’s icon on your smartphone’s homepage, hold it for 2–3 seconds to show the options, and tap on “Uninstall” or “Remove this app”.

After the app has been uninstalled, open Google Play or App Store and type “ecobee” in the search field.

Then, download the latest version of the ecobee app and connect your doorbell.

Note: Verify you’re installing the most current version of the ecobee app and allow the automatic updates function.

6. Assign ecobee with a Static IP

The ecobee doorbell may be repeatedly losing connection due to congestion in the IP address.

You must use the DHCP list in your router’s settings to assign ecobee with a static IP address, which will guarantee that no other devices in your home are trying to use the same IP address.

Step #1 Access the Router GUI

access the router gui

First, access the web GUI of your router by copying and pasting the network’s default gateway into your Wi-Fi or Ethernet-connected PC’s web browser.

The default gateway can be found by typing “ipconfig” in the Command Prompt of your PC.

Alternatively, try accessing the router’s GUI through this link, or find the gateway address on the bottom of your router (sticker).

At the login page, try signing in via “admin/admin” or “admin/password”, and if it doesn’t work, try finding the default login credentials for your router band online.

Note: Sometimes, service providers set custom credentials, so you might have to call them!

Step #2 Reserve the DHCP Address

Once you’re in the settings, navigate to “Network” → “DHCP List” or simply “DHCP” to view all assigned IP addresses concerning the MAC address.

Search for “ecobee” or “Doorbell” on the “DHCP Clients List” to identify which of the MAC addresses belong to your ecobee doorbell.

Once you have located your doorbell in the list, copy the “MAC Address” and “Assigned IP” value and click the “Assign New Address” or “Change DHCP” below.

Note: The exact name of the options may heavily vary per router model!

Step #3 Assign ecobee’s IP Address

assign ecobee’s ip address

You will then be required to assign a new IP address for the doorbell that’s not in use by another device on the network.

For example, it could start with “192.168.1” (according to the DHCP list’s values), and then a unique identifier should follow that’s relative to the MAC address.

Note: The ecobee doorbell will temporarily disconnect after assigning the new IP address!

7. Test Ecobee on Hotspot

The fault could be with the Wi-Fi network instead of with the ecobee doorbell.

The best way to determine this is to use a third-party Wi-Fi, such as your smartphone’s hotspot, and check if ecobee would still go offline.

test ecobee on hotspot
  • Before connecting ecobee, ensure the “Hotspot” feature is activated in the settings of your smartphone.

Now, follow the instructions from solution #3 to change ecobee’s Wi-Fi within the application by navigating to “Menu” → “General” → “Settings” → “Wi-Fi”.

Ensure you’re selecting the correct SSID and you’re typing the correct password value.

Shortly after ecobee connects, keep your smartphone at a 10–15 feet distance from the doorbell and keep checking the status within the app.

8. Reset your Ecobee’s System

If the ecobee doorbell keeps going offline after attempting all of the solutions so far, it’s time for a factory reset.

This will erase all of your doorbell’s settings, including the configuration within the ecobee application, and prompt you to complete the initial setup from scratch.

reset your ecobee’s system

Follow these steps to reset ecobee to factory settings:

  1. Flip the switch at the circuit breaker to the “Off” side.
  2. Wait for 10 seconds and push it back towards “On”.
  3. Remove the doorbell’s faceplate from the mounting.
  4. Hold the “Reset” button on the back for ~5 seconds.
  5. Release the button after the audio message’s output.

Shortly after the audio message is announced, the ecobee doorbell will power off and appear as “Offline” within the app for as long as the reset lasts.

So do not interact with the doorbell before it reboots, and when ready, connect to the Wi-Fi and test.

Note: If the doorbell refuses to connect to the Wi-Fi and nothing works, contact ecobee support or call them at 00 1 647-428-2220 for further assistance
