Worried with DJI Mic 2 Sounds Muffled? (Get Clear Audio!)

The DJI Mic 2 sounds muffled for many users right out of the box, leading to many recordings being utterly unusable.
Don’t worry–this is a common issue that is often caused by factors like mic placement, chest vibrations, low-frequency overload, and incorrect gain settings.
So, regardless of the issue’s origin, it can be resolved in ~5 minutes with our expert-polished solutions, so advance further into the guide…
Quick Ways To Fix When DJI Mic 2 Sounds Muffled
Note: Have you tried moving the microphone closer to your mouth and the DJI receiver?
1. Adjust DJI Mic 2 Transmitter Settings
If your DJI Mic 2 recordings sound muffled or distorted, improper transmitter settings might be the case.
So, each setting is responsible for the input of your DJI transmitter and can define the audio quality of the recording.
Settings like the Low Cut Filter, Gain, and recording format can optimize the mic for clearer, more professional audio output.
You can easily adjust these settings by going to “Settings” → “Transmitter” on your DJI Mic 2 receiver.
Enable the Low-Cut Filter:
When enabled, the Low Cut Filter removes low-frequency noise (100 Hz and below), such as rumble or chest vibrations, which is ideal for recording in noisy settings.
Areas with air conditioning, wind, or heavy bass reverb will be isolated by this filter!
Adjust the Transmitter Gain:
Configure the input gain on the DJI Mic 2 transmitter by tapping to adjust the level, right under the “Gain” option in the menu.
Aim for real-time value that keeps the volume bar from turning red, as this prevents clipping and ensures balanced audio during recordings.
Enable 32-Bit Float Recording:
Whenever activated, 32-bit float recording allows the transmitter to capture audio with a wider dynamic range, perfect for post-editing.
Also, keep in mind that the recording time is shorter compared to standard formats, providing greater flexibility for professional audio adjustments.
2. Optimize the DJI Transmitter Placement
Improper mic placement can lead to muffled or distorted audio in the recordings, as positioning affects the sound pickup quality.
Following these placement tips ensures clear, professional recordings:
- Attach the mic on the lapel of the clothing and away from the chest.
- Position the mic facing upward to improve sound capture and clarity.
- Fabric can reduce the quality, so avoid placing the DJI under clothing.
Check the positioning of the transmitter before each recording session to ensure the audio quality will not be degraded.
In addition, attach and use the soft cap that came with the DJI microphone to further isolate background noises that could trigger the low cut.
3. Use a High-Quality Wind Muff (Deadcat)
Another way to improve the DJI Mic 2 sound quality is to use a high-quality windscreen, often called a “deadcat”.
The wind muff is an essential microphone component, which can effectively minimize these issues by reducing unwanted noise while enhancing the voice clarity.
Attach the wind muff securely over the DJI Mic 2 transmitter and ensure it is fully covered.
Now, initiate recording while keeping the placement recommendations from the previous solution in mind, and check if the audio quality is improved.
With the order of the DJI Mic 2 set, you will receive two wind muffs for each of the transmitters, but you can always order a third-party muff for higher quality.
Note: Double-check if the DJI Mic 2 is charged to full capacity before starting another recording.
4. Adjust Camera Settings Affecting the Mic
Certain camera audio settings can degrade the DJI Mic 2 sound quality by introducing unwanted effects like muffling, uneven levels, or hiss.
So, disabling these settings and optimizing gain can ensure cleaner, more professional audio recordings.
Option #1 In-Camera Noise Reduction:
Noise reduction can add a muffled, “underwater” echo to your DJI Mic 2 audio. Turn it off in the camera’s Sound Recording or Audio Settings menu.
Option #2 Auto Gain Control (AGC):
AGC can cause uneven sound by unpredictably adjusting the DJI Mic 2 input.
Disable AGC and manually set the audio level to 12dB to 6dB peak.
Option #3 Wind Noise Reduction:
The wind noise reduction may cut mid and low frequencies, making the DJI Mic 2 sound thin.
You can easily disable it in the camera settings, especially indoors or with a deadcat.
Option #4 Digital Audio Filters:
Some cameras apply EQ or compression that unnaturally alters the DJI Mic 2 audio. Turn off any “Audio Enhancer” features unless needed for post-processing.
Option #5: Low-Quality Internal Preamp
A poor camera preamp can add hiss to the DJI Mic 2 audio. Lower the camera input gain and boost the mic gain to +6dB or +12 dB.
Note: Each of these settings can go by a different name in the configuration of your camera!
5. Minimize Background Noise While Recording
Environmental factors like chatter, traffic, or ambient sounds might degrade the audio quality of the transmitter and cause it to “over-gain”.
Adjusting your recording setup to reduce background noise can resolve muffling issues with the DJI Mic 2 transmitter.
Here are several tips for background noise management:
- Record in a quiet room with windows and doors shut.
- Use blankets or foam to reduce the background noise.
- Place the DJI Mic about ~6–12 inches from the mouth
- Deactivate fans, ACs, and any other nearby electronics.
Note: If you are recording outside, test the quality difference with and without background noise.
6. Enhance the Audio Post-Recording
Well, if your DJI Mic 2 recordings sound muffled or uneven, adjustments to the audio file after recording can significantly improve quality.
This can potentially help by refining frequencies and balancing levels through a third-party audio program or an equalizer that allows adjustments.
Here are general adjustment tips every third-party program should have:
- Boost the treble in your editing software to counter muffled audio and enhance clarity.
- Use a parametric EQ to cut all of the low mids (200–400 Hz) and lift highs (3–8 kHz).
- Normalize the audio levels through the entire audio file after uploading the recording.
- Apply compression on the file to smooth out volume differences for a balanced output.
Once you’ve eliminated the muffling from the audio file, save the preset and reapply it for each new recording you have made through the DJI Mic 2.
Important: Don’t forget to test with several different settings and equalizer presets to determine the impact on the audio file.
7. Install a Compatible TRS Lavalier Mic
One of the leading reasons why the DJI Mic 2 sounds bad is because of an incompatible TRRS lavalier mic.
The DJI Mic 2 is designed to work exclusively with the TRS lavaliers, and using a TRRS microphone, often made for smartphones, can lead to low volume or even full signal loss.
So, verify that your lavalier mic is a TRS model, and if it’s TRRS, replace it with a compatible TRS lavalier.
Once you have installed a compatible lavalier, test the DJI Mic 2 to check if the audio is improved.
8. Install the DJI Lavalier Mic Attachment
Using the DJI Lavalier Mic Attachment with your DJI Mic 2 can enhance audio by isolating your voice more effectively than the built-in mic.
This greatly reduces background noise for clearer recordings and also offers a better look by avoiding the bulky transmitter.
Here’s how to install and set up the lavalier mic attachment:
- Unclip the DJI Mic 2 transmitter from your clothing or setup.
- Next, connect the DJI Lavalier to the transmitter input port.
- Clip the lavalier mic to your collar and close to your mouth.
- Test the audio to ensure improved clarity and reduced noise.
Note: Position the lavalier mic properly and avoid covering it with clothing for clear audio!
9. Reset the DJI Mic 2 Receiver Settings
So, if the DJI Mic 2 sounds muffled after all steps so far, a factory reset of the receiver might resolve underlying issues with the software.
The procedure erases all content and data on the DJI Mic 2 receiver and “refreshes” the connection with each of the transmitters.
Note: The reset is effective against any issues with the DJI receiver.
Follow these steps to factory reset the DJI Mic 2 receiver:
- Access the control panel on the DJI Mic 2 receiver’s display.
- Navigate to “Settings” and select the “Factory Reset” option.
- Press the scroll button and press “Confirm” to start the reset.
- Wait until the factory reset procedure finalizes, and then test.
After the reset, reconfigure your receiver to ensure optimal audio performance.
Avoid using the charging case or interacting with the equipment during the reset, and do not place the receiver back in the case until the process finishes.
Note: Contact DJI support if the transmitter is still unable to pick up clear audio!
