Onkyo Receiver No Video Output? (Don’t Panic, Easy Fix!)
If you’re encountering the Onkyo receiver no video output error, don’t worry and read ahead!
Your Onkyo’s visual broadcast is essential for accurately setting up the AVR’s settings and for accessing other important functions.
If the video output fails to show, it could often be related to an incorrect input source selection or a video cable connection fault.
We recommend the following solutions for your AVR and TV setup:

How to Fix the Onkyo Receiver No Video Output Error?
Tip: Have you checked if a reboot on the TV or AVR helps with the issue?
1. Switch the TV to the Correct Input
The first and most important step is to ensure that your TV is set to the correct input source.
If you’ve connected the receiver to “HDMI 1” but picked to view “HDMI 2” on your TV, there will be nothing more than a black screen, even if Onkyo is securely plugged in.
- You can change the input source on most TVs by pressing the “Source” or “Input” button on the remote control.
Note: If your TV’s remote has no such button, try pressing the “Home” or “Menu” button and manually navigating into the inputs tab.
2. Check the Video Cable Connection
An HDMI connection problem could be the leading cause of why the Onkyo receiver stopped producing video.
As established, the connection between your AVR and TV must meet certain standards in order to transfer the signal effectively.
Check the following things regarding the TV and AVR’s connection:
- Check if your HDMI cable is securely plugged on both ends.
- Check if the HDMI cable is in good condition or has damage.
- Check if the input of the HDMI cable on both ends is working.
- Check if third-party devices are interrupting the signal output.
#1: Check for Interfering Devices:
You should also be informed of the possibility of a malfunctioning third-party device that’s causing issues with the Onkyo receiver’s signal transmission.
If you use any type of HDMI cable extenders or dividers, we recommend temporarily removing them and testing the Onkyo AVR.
#2: Test on Different HDMI Inputs:
As the only supported video connection type of the Onkyo receiver is HDMI, we could also recommend testing the device on some of the TV’s remaining inputs.
By a standard, a TV should have at least two HDMI inputs, one of which could either be a regular or use ARC.
Note: Upon connecting the receiver to a different TV input, don’t forget to manually change the input source in the TV’s menu.
3. Press Pure Audio or Music Optimizer
All Onkyo receivers have the so-called sound performance function that can be activated upon pressing an in-built button.
- Based on the receiver, the button can either be called “Pure Audio” or “Music Optimizer.”
Upon pressing it, all unnecessary processes, such as video transmission, will be shut down for better sound quality.
Fortunately, you don’t have to do anything more complex than pressing the button again to restore the normal functionality mode.
How to Check the Current Mode of the Onkyo Receiver?
Upon pressing the respective audio optimization button, the module on the receiver’s display should say whether the audio optimization is enabled or disabled.
So, verify whether it currently says “Disabled” or “OFF” and check whether the video broadcast of your Onkyo receiver is visible.
4. Change the TV’s Resolution Setting
Perhaps, the input signal of your Onkyo receiver is incompatible with the resolution of your TV.
This specifically applies to TVs utilizing 4K or 8K as older Onkyo receivers will be unable to reproduce and output that high-quality resolution.
Tip: It would be most optimal to test on full HD resolution (1080p) and on all values below it.
Here’s how to change the resolution’s value on most TV devices:
- Navigate to the menu or settings of the TV and go down.
- Search for the “Video” or “Picture” settings in the menu.
- Navigate to the “Resolution” field and access the values.
- Set the TV’s resolution to 1080p (full HD) and test Onkyo.
If the broadcast still doesn’t appear, keep making your way down the resolution list options and determine if any of the values will respond to the AVR’s input.
Tip: If not, try some of the highest resolution values and if nothing works, restore your TV’s resolution to how it was.
5. Deactivate the TV’s HDMI-CEC Feature
In some cases, an activated HDMI-CEC may also lead to the Onkyo receiver having no video output problem.
You can address this problem by temporarily setting the feature to “OFF” within the TV settings and attempting to turn on the Onkyo receiver and television individually, by themselves.
Here’s how to turn off the HDMI-CEC function on most TVs:
- Navigate to the menu or “Settings” tab of the TV device.
- Access the “Video,” “HDMI” or “Input” tab in the settings.
- Now, search for a line that says “HDMI-CEC” and select it.
- Press the “OK” button on the remote for CEC deactivation.
- Save the changes and exit the TV’s configuration menu.
Based on the TV and model type, the HDMI-CEC function could go by a different name, for example, Anynet+ on Samsung TVs and Bravia Sync on Sony TVs.
The sole purpose of HDMI-CEC is to allow your HDMI-connected devices to respond identically to the inputs of a single remote control, in most cases, your TV’s remote.
6. Restore the TV/Onkyo AVR to Defaults
If nothing so far had any effect, the most potent solution is to factory reset both your Onkyo receiver and the TV.
As a result, both of the device’s settings will be restored to default values. So, let’s start with a factory reset on the Onkyo AVR first!
6.1 How to Factory Reset an Onkyo Receiver?
Hold the CBL/SAT button on the front while pressing the “Power” button for the “CLEAR” message to show on the screen.
6.2 How to Factory Reset a TV? (Universal Way)
For exact instructions, we recommend consulting with the user manual of your TV.
- Navigate to “Menu” → “General/Info” → “System/Interface” → “Reset” → “Factory Reset” and enter the parental PIN if required.
Note: Once the reset begins, temporarily cease all interactions, until the process is completed.
7. Test the Receiver on Another TV or Monitor
Perhaps, there could be a fault with the matrix or input module of your TV or display, leading to broadcast issues with the Onkyo receiver.
So, for that reason, the next and final step would be to connect the Onkyo receiver HDMI to a compatible TV or monitor and test the functionality.
Note: If using a monitor, the device should automatically pick up the input signal of the AVR.
