Sony Bravia TV Won’t Connect To WiFi? (Here’s What to Do!)
You sit down to relax after a long day, but your Sony Bravia TV won’t connect to WiFi, leaving your screen stuck on the never-ending buffering.
Well, we’ve all been there! But don’t worry–this quick guide is guaranteed to diagnose the issue!
The problem often originates from a temporal functionality problem with the Sony TV, improper Wi-Fi details, or underlying network issues.
This quick guide will not only help you diagnose, but also resolve the issue in under 5 minutes!
9 Ways to Fix When Sony Bravia TV Won’t Connect to WiFi
Note: Have you verified that the Wi-Fi credentials (SSID and password) are correct?
1. Soft Reset the Sony Bravia TV (No Data Loss)
A soft reset is a rather simple solution, but extremely effective against temporary faults affecting particular functions of the TV.
To accomplish a power cycle (soft reset), unplug the TV from the outlet for ~60 seconds.
Then press the “Power” button on the remote control and wait for ~30 seconds while the TV is off. If the issue persists, then perhaps a Wi-Fi network issue is involved…
2. Connect the Sony Bravia to a Different Wi-Fi
Perhaps, you are attempting to connect the Sony Bravia TV to an inactive or unstable Wi-Fi network, and this causes the wireless setup to fail halfway through.
So, if your network router supports dual-band, ZontSound recommends testing the TV on the opposing Wi-Fi network.
Here’s how to set up the Sony Bravia with a different Wi-Fi:
- Open the “Settings” by pressing “Home” or “Quick Settings”.
- Navigate to “Network” and enter the “Network Setup” section.
- After that, choose “Wireless Setup” to begin the network scan.
- Wait until all of the available nearby networks have loaded up.
- Next, select the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band of your network router.
- Type the passkey, press “Connect”, and wait until the TV pairs.
Pro Tip: To test your TV on a different Wi-Fi, activate the “Hotspot” feature in the settings of your smartphone, check the SSID/password, and follow the steps above to connect.
3. Shorten the Distance to the Router
If the TV repeatedly fails to connect with the network, perhaps the wireless router is way too far, and either of the frequency bands fails to cover the distance requirements.
2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fis have different distance requirements, and your Sony TV must be within a certain range.
⚠️Alert: If you’re determined to use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi, move your router closer to the TV or vice versa!
4. Power Cycle the Wi-Fi Network Router
One of the primary reasons why the Sony Bravia TV is not connecting to WiFi is because of an underlying issue with the router.
In that regard, the next step is to perform a reset of the router power supply in order to eliminate any temporary and non-lasting issues affecting the network.
You can reset the power supply of the router by disconnecting it from the electrical outlet for approximately ~15–20 seconds.
Note: ZontSound advises against using any third-party equipment in the power setup of the router, such as strips, dividers, smart outlets, etc.
5. Reset the Sony Bravia Network Settings
Your Bravia TV might have run into an issue during the initial setup of the network, which has caused it to refuse all Wi-Fi connections.
So, to start clean, we advise resetting all the network settings of your TV and setting up the Wi-Fi connection from scratch.
Here’s how to reset the network settings of your Sony Bravia:
- Access the “Settings” app and navigate to “System”.
- Open the “Advanced” tab and go to “Reset options”.
- Enter “Reset network settings” in the options menu.
- Select “RESET SETTINGS” to proceed with the reset.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the settings.
Your TV will automatically “forget” all registered Wi-FI networks.
To set up the internet initially, follow the instructions in solution #2 to assign an available Wi-Fi connection.
6. Activate “Simple IP Control” on the TV
Many users suggest that activating the “Simple IP Control” function reassigns the IP address of your Sony Bravia TV automatically and prevents persistent connection losses.
So, the feature is available on both older and newer Sony Bravia TVs, through the “IP Control” tab in the settings.
Here’s how to activate “Simple IP Control” on your Sony Bravia TV:
- Navigate to “Settings” → “Network and Internet” on your TV.
- Press on “Home network”, then open the “IP control” section.
- After that, highlight “IP control” and verify it is set to “Enabled”.
Now, we recommend following the instructions in solution #1 to soft reset your Sony TV, so you can register the IP changes.
Reattempt to establish the Wi-Fi connection once your TV reboots.
7. Connect TV to a Private Guest Network
Some users reported that setting up the Sony Bravia TV on a guest network could effectively eliminate issues with the Wi-Fi setup.
You will have to access the web interface or “GUI” of the router, though, which may turn out to be the harder part.
The first step is to access the router GUI:
Alternatively, you can find the gateway address on the sticker on the underside of your router, or simply try to access your router settings from http://192.168.0.1/.
Once you are in the GUI, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the “Wireless” or “Network” settings below.
- Next, find the “Guest Network” or “Guest Wi-Fi” option.
- Set the guest network to 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz from the tab.
- Configure settings such as SSID, password, and WPA.
- Register the changes, and verify that the network is live.
- Follow the steps in solution #2 to change the TV Wi-Fi.
Quick Tip: Before connecting your TV, you should first test the guest network through your Android or iOS smartphone after activating the Wi-Fi. You must forget your current network first.
8. Reset the Sony Bravia TV to Default Settings
In case the issue is still there, ZontSound recommends restoring the Sony Bravia TV to default settings and then testing the Wi-Fi connection.
Well, misconfigured network details, corrupted firmware, and DNS mismatch could all lead to issues with both the wired and wireless setups.
- You can factory reset most Sony Bravia TVs at “Settings” → “System” → “Device Preferences” → “About” → “Reset” → “Factory data reset”.
⚠️Warning: The factory reset erases ALL information on your Sony Bravia TV permanently!
9. Test the TV on a Wired Connection (Ethernet)
If the Sony Bravia TV won’t connect to WiFi, then our suggestion is to temporarily switch to a wired Ethernet connection.
The wired conversion procedure for the Sony Bravia is simple, but verify the following things first:
Now, follow these steps to set up the Sony Bravia TV:
- Locate the LAN (Ethernet) port on your Sony Bravia and router.
- Connect the cable into the router and the other end into the TV.
- Next, check if the Ethernet cable starts blinking on both ends.
Based on your Sony Bravia TV model, proceed with the appropriate steps:
9.1: Android-enabled Sony Bravia TVs:
- Press the “HOME” button on the supplied TV remote.
- Then, navigate to “Settings” and scroll downwards.
- Follow the on-screen steps to finalize the wired setup.
9.2: Older Internet-enabled Sony Bravia TVs:
- First, press the “HOME” button on the supplied TV remote.
- Next, access “Settings” → “Network” → “Network Setup”.
- Select “Set up network connection”, then “Wired Setup”.
- Then, set the function to “Easy” or “Auto” from the options.
- Wait until the Sony TV configures the Ethernet connection.
Note: Get in touch with Sony Customer Support if the Wi-Fi issues persist, or if the TV refuses to connect over Ethernet as well.
