VIZIO TV Keeps Changing Input On Its Own? (Let’s Fix!)

VIZIO tv keeps changing input on its own

We know how weird it is when VIZIO TV keeps changing input on its own, whether it’s when you’re turning on the TV or randomly while streaming.

Don’t worry–whatever problem with the VIZIO TV inputs you face, this guide will help you out in identifying it and resolving it in a matter of minutes.

Let’s get started…

VIZIO TV Keeps Changing Input On Its Own – 7 Ways To Fix!

Note: Have you tried rebooting your VIZIO TV by unplugging it from the outlet for 1 minute?

1. Disable the VIZIO TV HDMI-CEC

disable the vizio tv hdmi-cec

The CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) is a feature of your VIZIO TV that comes enabled by default.

This option allows you to turn on HDMI-connected devices with the TV remote control, which can often interfere with the default VIZIO TV input and cause potential source problems.

If you’re not using the feature actively, and you don’t need it, disabling it may resolve the input problem on your VIZIO TV.

After all, that is the official solution suggested by the VIZIO Support team regarding reports stating that VIZIO TV is changing the input source without interaction.

Here’s how to disable the HDMI-CEC on your VIZIO TV:

  1. From the VIZIO main screen, go to “All Settings”.
  2. Choose “System”, and select the “CEC” setting.
  3. Set “CEC” to “Disabled” and exit the TV settings.

Now, try to replicate the input issue on your VIZIO TV. If they continue to change, do not enable the CEC option yet.

We recommend first applying the following solution and then re-enabling it.

2. Set the Default VIZIO TV Input

set the default vizio tv input

VIZIO TVs have a very convenient option called “Input At Power On”, where you can specify which TV input you want to view whenever you turn on the TV.

Here’s how to set the default input on a VIZIO TV:

  1. From the TV menu, go to “All Settings”.
  2. Then, scroll down and choose “System”.
  3. Select the “Input at Power On” option.

The option provides you with two choices:

  • VIZIO Home – When powered on, the VIZIO TV will always use the default TV input (e.g, VIZIO TV home screen).
  • Last Used TV Input – The VIZIO TV will always show the last input that you’ve used (e.g, HDMI, DTV, Component, or AV).

The reason why you’re facing a problem could be due to the selected “Last Used TV Input”.

For example, if you have used a connected HDMI console, and the console is OFF when you turn on the VIZIO TV, the “last used” input is empty, so your VIZIO TV will automatically switch to an input that has something connected and working.

This is a feature that has been added with one of the latest TV firmwares, and most likely, that is why the VIZIO changes inputs on its own.

The solution, of course, is to select “VIZIO Home” as the default input and always view it upon turning the TV on.

3. Use a Boot Sequence & Delay

use a boot sequence & delay

If your Vizio TV keeps changing inputs on its own, the problem could be due to an improper boot sequence and providing no delay for source recognition.

If you turn on your devices, let’s say a receiver and a VIZIO TV simultaneously, the receiver will need a few moments to start sending a signal.

If you don’t use the correct boot sequence and/or provide a few seconds of delay, the VIZIO TV will check the source for the signal and won’t find any.

In those cases, as mentioned, the VIZIO TV will just switch to an input source that has anything running, which most of the time would be “VIZIO Home”.

So, here’s the booting routine you need to adapt to:

  • Always power on your connected device first (e.g, console, receiver, etc.).
  • Always wait ~5–10 seconds for the signal before turning on the VIZIO TV.

As simple as this may sound, this will guarantee that the signal from your connected device has reached the VIZIO TV before the TV checks for input.

Hence, there won’t be a need for the TV to switch inputs, as the “last used one” will not be empty.

We hope this makes sense, because it does work. At least that’s how most people solve this!

4. Ensure a Continuous TV Signal

ensure a continuous tv signal

If you don’t want to comply with the boot sequence routines or the delay allowance ritual, you can simply ensure a continuous TV signal at all times.

What does this mean? Well, just keep your receiver, console, or whatever you’ve got connected to the TV running 24/7.

That’ll guarantee that each time you turn on the VIZIO TV with the “Last Used” option selected under “Input at Power On”, the input source will not be empty.

Note: If you’re not concerned about the electricity bill, there is nothing to worry about, as machines such as computers, consoles, and receivers are designed to operate without a break–nothing will happen to them even if they work 24/7.

5. Remove the Remote Batteries

remove the remote batteries

If you’re experiencing something extremely weird, such as your VIZIO TV changing inputs on its own while you’re watching something, it could be the remote.

Sometimes, when the remote is defective, perhaps damaged by liquids or anything else, the unit could be sending false signals to the TV, changing the inputs.

Another possibility would be interference from a nearby VIZIO TV remote control, maybe even from another room.

So, check what’s happening and to test this theory out, eject the batteries of all remotes near your VIZIO TV.

This will instantly help you exclude or justify those possibilities.

6. Disconnect ALL Input Devices

A quick way to find out whether the automatic inputs switching on your VIZIO TV is caused by a setting or bug with one of your devices, just disconnect everything.

This includes HDMI, AUX, RCA, or AV devices connected to the VIZIO TV.

disconnect all input devices

You must only leave the power cable connected and test if the inputs will keep changing.

If not, start reconnecting your devices one by one to determine which one causes the issue, and when you do, look for a setting that may be causing it.

Some settings you need to consider are HDMI-CEC, Wake on HDMI, Auto Input, HDMI Detection, and more…

7. Reset your VIZIO TV to Defaults

If nothing helps and VIZIO TV keeps changing input on its own, we should start assuming that there is a problem on a software level.

The operating system on your VIZIO TV might be causing the unexpected behavior; hence, a complete factory reset will exclude this as well.

⚠️Warning: The factory reset on your VIZIO TV will permanently erase absolutely everything, including your user settings, apps, remembered Wi-Fi, etc.

reset your vizio tv to defaults

Here’s how to factory reset a VIZIO TV in easy steps:

  • Navigate to the Menu, go to “Admin & Privacy” and choose “Reset to Factory Settings”.
  • From the Menu, go to “System”, select “Admin & Privacy”, and choose “Reset to Factory Settings”.
  • Head to the Menu, select “All Settings”, then “Admin & Privacy”, and “Reset to Factory”.

If you’ve previously set up a 4-digit PIN code, you’ll need to insert it. The default PIN code is “0000,” and after being inserted, the factory reset begins.
