Your Yealink Update Skipped? (Here’s How to Fix!)

yealink update skipped

If you’re encountering the “Yealink update skipped” error, the problem is often related to your provisioning server.

When the configuration file that includes the firmware, settings, and needed data is inaccessible, your Yealink phone will say “update skipped” and bypass the provisioning.

Luckily, there are a few quick ways to address this problem:

  • Soft-reset the Yealink phone via unplugging.
  • Ensure that the RPS is configured correctly.
  • Change your provisioning server password.
  • Try to manually provision the Yealink phone.
  • Reset your Yealink phone to factory settings.

Sounds difficult? Well, don’t worry we have an in-depth walkthrough below!

How to Fix the Yealink Update Skipped Error in Easy Steps?

Note: Are you confident that your Yealink phone is connected to an accessible network?

1. Soft-Reset the Yealink Phone

The first and easiest step when you’re facing the “update skipped” error on a Yealink phone is to soft reset the unit by unplugging it from the outlet for 60 seconds.

This is a straightforward step and will not erase anything from your phone or RPS configuration, just reset the Yealink system.

So, unplug the phone for 60 seconds, connect the adapter, and check whether the provisioning process during the device’s startup will be skipped again.

If yes, continue reading…

2. Configure your Yealink’s RPS

To explain this step as concisely as possible, the “update skipped” error appears because the provisioning process during the setup is not successful.

  • The provisioning is a simple attempt by the phone to acquire the configuration from the RPS (Redirection and Provisioning Service).

This happens during the boot of the Yealink phone, and if no RPS or local provisioning is found, the phone will say “update skipped” and bypass the provisioning.

To fix this, you’ll need to ensure that your RPS provisioning is configured correctly!

2.1 Logging into the RPS

As a user, you must be assigned a username and a password for the RPS server, hence you can log in by using this URL: https://rps.yealink.com.

Simply, copy and paste or type the URL into the PC’s web browser, then press Enter and the login screen of the interface will show up.

Then, insert your username and password, and click on the Login button to sign in to your RPS.

Note: You will be automatically disconnected after 10 minutes for security reasons!

2.2 Adding Yealink Phone

The next step is to add your Yealink phone to the RPS server.

If your Yealink phone is already added, we recommend removing it and re-adding it again, in case the information is incorrect.

Here are the steps to add your Yealink phone to the RPS server:

  1. Click on the “Add Device” button from the summary page.
  2. Find the MAC address on the sticker on your phone’s back.
  3. Alternatively, navigate to OK Status Handset MAC.
  4. On the Server field, select the server that belongs to you.

If you have other (invalid) MAC addresses in the MAC list, remove them. If you receive an error, verify that the MAC format is correct.

Also, if you see a prompt “Override” press Yes to continue.

Note: Often, on the server field you’ll have “Server 1” but the server field can also be “None”.

2.3 Adding Config Server

adding config server

The last step in registering the Yealink phone to the RPS is to add a configuration server, which your PBX or VoIP provider hosts.

You will need to know the URL of your server to include it.

When you have the URL, the steps are simple:

  1. Click on the Add Server button from the summary.
  2. Then name your server (maximum 20 characters).
  3. Insert the exact URL of your PBX or VoIP server.
  4. Click on the “Save” button to add the provisioning.

The server will appear on the top, which means that you’re fully set.

When ready, reboot your Yealink phone to check whether the provisioning during the boot-up will pass through and if the “update skipped” error will now be there.

If yes, continue reading…

Note: There are only 4 URL formats supported: http, https, ftp and tftp!

3. Change your Provisioning Details

change your provisioning details

Sometimes, the “update skipped Yealink” error may arise even when your RPS is configured properly and your phone and provisioning server is added and working.

According to some users, if you have a special symbol in your provisioning server’s password, such as “&” or “/” the phone can’t access it during boot up.

Luckily, it’s very easy to change the provision’s server password, especially if you have access to the PBX or VoIP interface access.

So, the next step is to change the password:

  1. First, sign in to your PBX or VoIP administrator portal.
  2. The credentials are often acquired from the provider.
  3. Look for the “Auto-Provisioning” menu, tab, or section.
  4. Click on “Reset/Change” the provisioning password.
  5. Add a new password using A–Z and 1–9 characters.

When you’re ready, restart your Yealink phone and sign into your RPS to check whether there is an error with the phone or the provisioning server due to the change.

If yes, re-add the device and URL of the provisioning server and restart the unit to check for the “update skipped” error.

If you still see the error, keep reading…

4. Try to Manually Provision Yealink

If you’re tired from the Yealink config update skipped error, maybe it’s best to manually provision a Yealink phone by downloading the configuration file.

To do so, access your provisioning server and locate from where you can manually download the configuration file onto your computer.

Note: Your computer must be connected to the same network as your Yealink phone to access the Yealink configuration portal.

When you have the configuration file, follow these instructions:

  1. On the Yealink phone, go to the “Status”.
  2. The phone IP will be displayed so note it.
  3. In your web browser, insert this address.
  4. Sign in to your Yealink phone’s interface.
  5. Info: admin/admin or admin/password.
  6. Then go to “Settings” → “Configuration.”
  7. Locate and click “Import Configuration.”
  8. Select the downloaded configuration file.

When ready, reboot your phone.

Note that if there is a problem with the RPS or the provisioning server, the phone will skip the provisioning phase, but the “update skipped” error will be gone.

Note: You’ll need to manually import the config file every time there is a new firmware version!

5. Factory Reset your Yealink Phone

factory reset your yealink phone

If nothing works, and the Yealink phone cannot obtain the configuration file from the provisioning server during boot-up, it’s time for a factory reset.

Perhaps the fault is on a software level, and it comes from your Yealink phone, rather than by the RPS configuration or the provisioning server.

Here’s how to factory reset your Yealink phone in easy steps:

  1. Go to “Status” to find the phone’s IP address.
  2. Insert the IP address in the URL of a browser.
  3. Press Enter and sign in to your phone’s GUI.
  4. Go to Settings and select the Upgrade tab.
  5. Finally, choose the “Reset to Factory” option.

That’s it. Your Yealink phone will shortly reset to factory settings.

When the process is ready, log in to your RPS portal to check if the device is connected and if the provisioning server is added.

Finally, restart your phone and check if the “update skipped” error is still there.

Note: If yes, contact the provider of the provisioning server to check for any issues on their side!
