Roku Ultra Won’t Turn On? (Quick Fixes to Power It Up!)
When your Roku Ultra won’t turn on, many users often assume the worst–don’t worry, it’s not a lethal problem in most cases.
The reason probably hides behind the power cord, the HDMI cables, or has something to do with one of the potential connected third-party/external devices.
In this guide, we will break down all of the potential causes and enlist expert solutions to do everything possible for your Roku Ultra!
How to Fix When the Roku Ultra Won’t Turn On?
Before we dive deeper into the guide, have a look at the Roku Ultra LED:
Based on whether there is an indicator or not, we can quickly rule out potential issues with the Roku Ultra.
However, keep in mind that if there is no indicator at all, it could also indicate a serious problem with the hardware that requires Roku’s attention.
Now, let’s attempt some advanced solutions to resolve the problem!
1. Unplug the Roku Ultra Power Supply
Well, unplugging the Roku Ultra power supply is among the most helpful solutions for all types of problems with the player, including no video or potential hardware failures.
The steps below will test the power supply of your Roku Ultra and discover issues effectively:
Step #1: Unplug & Inspect the Roku Power Supply
First, unplug the Roku Ultra from power and HDMI, but before that, ensure your player uses the originally supplied 5V/1A adapter or HDMI.
Wait for ~50–60 seconds until the Roku Ultra player discharges entirely, and proceed with step #2 to test the power.
Step #2: Test the Roku Ultra “Post-Unplug” Behaviour
Start by inspecting the Roku Ultra player LED. Flashing white to dark means power issues, solid white suggests HDMI problems, and no light indicates a power supply.
So, reconnect the power adapter or HDMI of the Roku Ultra and check if the indicator lights up or changes.
Note: The Roku Ultra can be either powered over HDMI with the TV or use a direct adapter.
2. Test the Roku Ultra Power Equipment
If your Roku Ultra refuses to power on or does not display video, the power adapter or HDMI connection used for supplying power to the player might have malfunctioned.
So, testing either of these cables, based on the one your Roku uses, can help you identify the problem.
Disconnect the Roku Ultra from power, connect its HDMI or A/C adapter to another compatible device, and check if the other device receives video feed or power.
If the cable does not work on the replacement device as well, replace the faulty component with a compatible 5V, 1A adapter or new HDMI cable, then test on the original setup.
3. Plug the Roku Ultra into a Different Outlet
The reason why the Roku Ultra won’t power on is often due to a faulty outlet that suspends the power supply to your player.
After connecting, turn on the device and monitor the performance for about ~10–15 minutes, along with the LED indicator, to test the player.
If the Roku powers on while connected to a different outlet, get in touch with a technician to inspect the power line of the room or the location where your Roku plugs in.
Note: If your Roku receives power over HDMI, have you tried an alternative USB port?
4. Turn On the Roku Ultra Without the Remote
A workaround using the Roku Ultra CEC feature (if enabled) can help you understand whether the problem is remote or signal-related.
For this step to work, your Roku Ultra needs to turn on along with the TV, thanks to the HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) feature.
Here’s how to bypass the Roku Ultra remote control:
- Plug the Roku Ultra into power over HDMI with the CEC activated.
- Locate and press the “Power” button on the connected TV device.
- Select the Roku HDMI input to access the player’s home screen.
When ready, check if you can control the Roku Ultra through the Roku mobile application on your smartphone and activate the HDMI-CEC feature in your TV settings.
5. Bypass Third-Party & External Devices
The Roku Ultra might be failing to power on due to interference from third-party devices using HDMI, Coaxial, Optical, or even Bluetooth, that are connected to your TV.
ZontSound strongly recommends disconnecting all external devices from your TV for this step and testing the Roku.
Hence, disconnect all third-party HDMI devices or adapters and make sure the Roku Ultra is plugged directly into the TV.
Do not forget to disconnect all external devices from your TV as well before testing the startup of the Roku Ultra.
6. Test the Roku Ultra on Another TV
The startup issue of your Roku Ultra might be with the connected TV rather than the streaming player itself.
We recommend testing the Roku Ultra on a different TV to isolate potential issues with the power supply, HDMI, or even the TV’s USB interface.
Unplug the Roku Ultra from its current TV, connect it to the USB of an alternative TV or monitor, and use the original 5V/2A power adapter.
If the Roku Ultra turns on uninterruptedly, the settings or hardware of the original TV might have malfunctioned.
7. Reset the Roku Ultra to Default Settings
The factory reset is a highly effective solution for any issues, especially when the Roku Ultra won’t turn on.
The procedure requires pressing and holding the physical Reset button of the Roku Ultra, as the system is not accessible.
Here’s how to factory reset the Roku Ultra in easy steps:
- Locate the Reset button on the Roku Ultra, often on the side or bottom.
- Now, press and hold the Reset button with a paperclip for 10 seconds.
- Next, release when the LED blinks rapidly, indicating the reset is done.
Even if the indicator does not blink, cease all interactions with the Roku and do not unplug the device for at least 2–3 minutes.
