lorex transfer ownership

We understand how puzzling Lorex transfer ownership can be, but fortunately, there is not one but three simple ways to do it.

Whether you prefer to add the new owner as a shared user, export your account info, or start from scratch, this guide clears it up.

Let’s first explore the different ways to do it…

Pre-Transfer Checklist for Lorex Ownership

Before initiating the Lorex transfer ownership process, there are a few essential checks that ensure a smooth and secure transition to the new owner.

Below are the most important checks to conduct before starting the ownership change:

  • Recordings backup: Save important footage to an external drive or cloud storage.
  • Account access: Ensure you can sign into your Lorex account and be an admin.
  • Device Status: Verify that all devices are online and connected in the Lorex app.
  • New owner email: Make sure you have to correct email address of the new owner.
  • App version: Double-check if the Lorex app is updated to the most current firmware.

The Complete Lorex Transfer Ownership Guide!

So, depending on your situation and the new occupant’s requirements, you can transfer the ownership in one of 3 ways:

  • Method #1: Adding the new owner as a shared user.
  • Method #2: Export the account information.
  • Method #3: Removing everything and starting again.

Well, based on your transfer preferences, proceed with the appropriate method and follow the instructions carefully to fully promote someone else as the new owner of your Lorex system.

1. Add the New Owner as a Shared User

add new owner as a shared user

The first method is to add the new owner as a shared user to your existing Lorex account, which allows them to access the system while you are still in control until a complete transfer is done.

Well, this method ensures the new owner becomes familiar with the controls of the system and the functions within the application before taking over completely.

Step #1: Access the Settings

First, launch the Lorex app on your smartphone or tablet and navigate to the Device Settings section to access user management options.

In this section, you can access the settings of devices connected to your Lorex control and manage them seamlessly.

Step #2: Add a Shared User

Press the “Shared Users” option from the drop-down, then tap on “Add Shared User” to start sending the invitation.

Now, write down the email address of the new owner and proceed with the permissions page.

Note: Inspect each of the permissions checkboxes and decide which account permissions to grant to the new shared user of your account.

Step #3: Send an Invitation

send an invitation:

Confirm the invitation by tapping the Send button, which will email the new owner and enable them to accept the shared access for your Lorex account.

Inform the new owner that the email should arrive shortly, and to press “Accept” or “Continue” in the email to proceed with sign up.

You can always reconfigure the permissions of each shared user through the “Shared Users” tab, where you can also remove them from the Lorex account, as long as you are the owner.

During this type of transfer, one or more of your Lorex cameras might stop recording videos

Note: Keep in mind that each shared user has a different email address and accesses the Lorex system from their account, with specific permissions.

Important: Transferring Old NVR/DVR Systems:

Keep in mind that older NVR/DVR systems use older administration technology, and this makes it impossible to add shared users or assign them administrator privileges.

Older Lorex NVR/DVR systems do not support shared users, meaning email-based transfers are out of the equation.

For these systems, the transfer procedure involves contacting Lorex customer support to manually reset the device.

transferring old nvr/dvr systems:

However, you must provide the Lorex agents with:

  • A picture of the serial number on each camera.
  • A picture of your NVR/DVR + the serial number.

You can start the conversation with these details, and if there is anything else needed, it will be requested by the customer support while on the go.

2. Export the Account Owner Information

Yet another reliable option to transfer the ownership of your Lorex account is to export the entire account information.

This approach ensures a smooth ownership transition by sharing your data without releasing immediate complete access to the new owner.

This way, the new owner will sign in through your very own account, without compromising your presence in any way.

Unlike the shared user method, this does not require the new owner to sign in through a new account and uses the one with existing permissions.

Step #1: Access the Account Tab

access the account tab:

First, launch the Lorex app on your mobile device and navigate to the Account tab to begin the transfer.

Also, make sure you are signed in through the admin account of the Lorex registration, otherwise, none of the data will be transferred successfully.

Step #2: Locate the Export Option

Proceed to the Security section from the on-screen options within the Account tab and select the “Export Account Info” option.

Now, you will be redirected to another page where you can confirm the ownership transfer and assign any other requirements for the procedure.

Step #3: Send the Exported Info

send the exported info:

So, once you are done, tap the “Export” button, enter the email address of the new user, and confirm to send an authentication code.

This allows them to view the account information (the login credentials) and sign in anytime, without compromising your activity.

3. Set up the Lorex Account From Scratch

If neither of the transfer Lorex ownership methods above seems to apply in your situation, then perhaps it would be most beneficial for the new user to start from scratch.

If they insist on using your existing registration, then a reasonable option would be to manually remove all of the existing Lorex devices, change the account information, and then transfer.

Step #1: Deregister All Lorex Devices

The first step is to manually remove each of your existing Lorex devices.

This step is optional, as in some cases, an ownership transfer might be required when you are moving out of your home or apartment and want to keep the existing configuration for the new home occupants.

deregister all lorex devices:

However, if you wish to remove your devices, here’s how:

  • Access the Lorex app and head to the “Device List” or “My Devices” section.
  • Select each device, tap “Remove” or “Delete”, and confirm to deregister them.
  • Repeat the instructions from above for each of the registered Lorex devices.

Once you are done, you can check for any leftover devices under “Device List”.

Verify your smartphone maintains a stable connection to the Wi-Fi/internet before and after the removal.

Step #2: Change the Email and Password

Now, access your account settings in the application or Lorex website, then update the email and password values by getting in touch with Lorex support.

You could also use the “Forgot Password” function to reset the password, but for your email address, contact the support.

Step #3: Provide New Owner with the Info

provide new owner with the info

Once you are done with steps #1 and #2, you can now provide the new owner with the updated email and password.

Prompt them to sign out of their existing Lorex registration, and check if the email and password can sign them into the existing account.

Important: Reset Router Passwords & Port Forwards:

You can prevent unauthorized access to the Lorex system after it has been transferred by resetting the password of your router and the existing forwardings to another port.

This ensures that all of the transferred details remain secure and only accessible by the new owner.

To configure these options, you must access the GUI of your network router:

  • Acquire the default gateway by typing “ipconfig” in your PC CMD and copying the line.
  • Sign in to the router by using the existing credentials or the default “admin” / “admin”.
  • Reset the GUI and wireless passwords under “Access Control” and the “Wireless” tab.
  • Disable all existing port forwarding rules under the “Port Forwarding” GUI tab section.

Is it Possible to Transfer a Lorex Cloud Subscription?

possible to transfer a lorex cloud subscription

Unfortunately, transferring a Lorex Cloud subscription is not possible due to account-specific restrictions.

Lorex Cloud subscriptions are designed to be tied to a single user account and location and require a new plan for each additional user or ownership transfer procedure.

Instead of transferring the subscription, you can add the new owner as a shared user following the instructions in method #1 to provide them access to the basic configuration settings.

For the new owner to have their cloud storage, they will have to set up a separate Lorex Cloud plan for their location after the ownership transfer.

Lorex Ownership: Frequently Asked Questions!

We have covered most of the misunderstandings regarding the transfer here:

What if the new owner does not receive the email?

In case the new owner does not receive the invitation, check the spam or junk folder of the email and verify that the email address is spelled correctly within the application.

Can I transfer without losing the footage?

can i transfer without losing the footage?

Yes, exporting account information (method #2) allows the new owner to fully access existing recordings, but setting up from scratch (method #3) may erase all existing footage.

The only way to preserve the footage in a full wipeout is to have a backup.

Why can’t I change my Lorex account email in the app?

The Lorex mobile application requires getting in touch with the support to change the account email. This is because the feature is not directly editable due to security protocols.

What if I can’t deregister device(s) before the transfer?

To have a smooth Lorex transfer ownership, ZontSound recommends checking if the Lorex mobile app is up-to-date, clearing the cache, and reinstalling it if you are unable to deregister.
