Night Owl Playback Not Working? (Try This Quick Fix!)
If you have recently noticed that your Night Owl playback not working, it is a clear sign that something has gone wrong with your system.
Such an issue exposes your home security and must be resolved immediately.
Whether it is the recorder, motion settings, or the Night Owl camera itself, in this quick guide from Zontsound, you will learn all possible causes and solutions.
Let’s get started…
How to Fix the Night Owl Playback Not Working Issue?
Note: Verify the Night Owl camera is online within the application!
1. Reboot the Night Owl App or Recorder
Based on whether you are using the Night Owl application or the NVR/DVR for playback, one of the most common ways to address the issue is a reboot.
Force closing the Night Owl application or power cycling (discharging) the Night Owl recorder is a proven way to refresh the system and resolve any bugs.
1.1 How to Force Close the Night Owl App:
1.2 How to Reboot the Night Owl Recorder:
- Power off the NVR/DVR by disconnecting the adapter.
- Hold the “Power” button on the panel for ~10 seconds.
- Reconnect the recorder and check if the issue persists.
Note: As long as the footage of your Night Owl recorder is stored locally, you can view all of the recordings under the “Playback” tab, accessible through the homepage.
2. Reinsert the Night Owl Camera SD Card
If the Night Owl camera fails to detect the SD card, none of the stored footage will be accessible through the timeline in the application.
Hence, removing your SD card refreshes the storage of the camera and updates the recording status within the application.
Follow these steps to reinsert the Night Owl camera SD card:
While you’re at it, check for any dust accumulation or even damage on the microSD card itself or the tray compartment.
Use a microfiber cloth to thoroughly clean your camera components before reinserting the card and testing the footage.
3. Use a Different Application with Night Owl
Night Owl has multiple applications, downloadable through the Google Play Store or App Store, such as the Protect, Connect, and X variations, of practically the same platform.
Well, each of the applications is focused on a different aspect of the system, so we recommend “migrating” your Night Owl camera temporarily to test if the playback will work.
As per the recent OpticsMag review: “The app seems to be a bit subpar. Users complain that it’s plagued with bugs and crashes often.”
Night Owl Protect (General Purpose)
The Night Owl Protect app works best at managing various Night Owl devices, not just cameras.
The platform offers a wide range of playback features alongside real-time monitoring and smart alerts for motion events.
Night Owl Connect (Works Best with Cameras)
The Night Owl Connect app is designed for camera-specific use with a straightforward mobile setup, live video streaming, and motion detection push notifications.
This Night Owl platform focuses on improving the playback and live feed of your Night Owl cameras.
Night Owl X (Designed for Advanced Systems)
The “X” application is similar to Connect but potentially an alternate version, also focusing on expanding the features of your cameras.
Testing this app can reveal if your playback hiccup is app-specific, offering a fresh start for your Night Owl system.
Note: To “migrate” the Night Owl camera, you must deregister it from the current application!
4. Deregister the Night Owl Camera Profile
Another reason why the Night Owl app playback is not working is an underlying problem in the connection between the camera and the application.
However, this could happen only in configurations where the user does not rely on local storage directly and uses SD instead.
So, to resolve the problem, you must re-add the Night Owl camera profile!
Step #1 Remove the Camera from the App:
Step #2 Re-Add the Camera to the App:
Alert: Removing the camera device profile erases all custom user settings within the app!
5. Activate “Overwrite” on the Night Owl NVR/DVR
If the hard drive of your Night Owl NVR/DVR has exceeded its capacity, the recordings available for playback might become frozen or inaccessible until further notice.
So, the best thing to do is enable “Overwrite”, which automatically deletes the old files to make space for new recordings.
Note: If you have any sensitive footage on your recorder that you want to keep, you can always use an external SATA cable and upload the recordings to your PC or laptop.
So, here’s how to activate “Overwrite” on the Night Owl recorder:
Tip: You could also manually delete stored footage under “HDD Management” if you want to quickly free up space.
6. Adjust the System Motion Detection
The Night Owl camera might fail to display the playback footage, due to a problem with the motion detection, or if collectively, there is no footage on the recorder HDD.
So, ZontSound advises reconfiguring the motion detection settings of your Night Owl system and trying to capture a brand-new recording from scratch.
Enable the Motion Detection
You must activate the motion detection of your Night Owl camera, otherwise, no footage will be directed towards the HDD.
Here’s how:
Note: You can find the rest of the motion detection settings on your NVR/DVR, at “Camera Settings” → “Detection Settings”.
Adjust Motion Sensitivity
Increase the motion sensitivity option in the Detection Settings to ensure the Night Owl camera detects all events, at about 60% to 70%.
This adjustment helps the camera trigger recordings consistently and enables the playback of captured footage.
Adjust the Detection Zones
Define custom motion zones in the app or Night Owl client by selecting specific areas within the camera view to focus on for motion detection.
This setup ensures recordings are triggered only in relevant areas, which improves the accuracy of the system playback.
Adjust the Recording Schedule
Check the recording mode for each channel in the Detection Settings or Recording menu and ensure it is not set to “None”.
Then, select Motion, Continuous, or Scheduled based on your monitoring needs and save the changes.
Note: The Night Owl camera will also fail to record if there are issues with the detection.
7. Reset the Night Owl Recorder Settings
If the Night Owl playback is not working even after adjusting the detection settings, our most solid advice is to perform a factory reset on the recorder.
The procedure restores the recorder to default settings, clearing potential glitches that prevent the playback of stored footage.
Alert: All settings of the recorder will be reset to the defaults! If you are confident in losing all information and data, follow these steps:
Once you are done, set up the recorder from scratch and re-add each Night Owl camera to test the functionality of the playback.
