Why is the Kogan TV Remote Control Not Working?
Factors, such as programming and battery charge are what define the functionality of your Kogan TV remote control.
So, if the batteries are no longer working or you have completed the programming procedure incorrectly, the remote control won’t be able to control the television.
Here are all causes why the Kogan TV remote no longer functions properly:
What Signal Does Kogan TV Remote Use?
Kogan TV remotes typically use IR signals to communicate with the TV, but some models are Bluetooth-supported and require a USB dongle.
Kogan TVs can either use Android software or have a Smart firmware of their own, altering the programming process for the remote control.
How to Recognise Kogan TV Firmware?
- On Android Kogan TV, go to “Settings” → “About this TV” to view the Android OS.
- On Smart Kogan TV, navigate to “Settings” → “About” to review the system details.
Tip: It’s best to consult with the user manual if you’re using a Smart Kogan TV!
Kogan TV Remote Not Working – Proven Solutions
Tip: Follow the steps in consecutive order!
1. Discharge the Remote’s Power
Regardless of whether the Kogan remote works with an Android or Smart TV, discharging the electrical supply of the unit is an effective and proven solution to communicating issues.
The Kogan TV remote uses two triple-A batteries to support the communication and the IR signal.
Here’s how to discharge the Kogan remote control in easy steps:
- Turn your Kogan remote control upside down.
- Next, remove the battery compartment cover.
- Remove both batteries from the compartment.
- Hold the “Power” button on the remote control.
- After 30 seconds, reinsert the batteries back in.
Important: Battery Replacement
If taking the batteries in and out did not restore the functionality of the remote, you should insert a fresh set of triple-A batteries.
We advise performing battery replacement as early as possible.
2. Program the Kogan Remote Control
Standard IR Kogan remotes that do not use Bluetooth, and a dongle can be typically paired to any TV and used as a universal remote control.
If you’re not using a Kogan TV with your Bluetooth Kogan remote control, you may be unable to finalise the programming properly.
How to Program a Kogan IR Remote Control?
- Verify that the TV device is supplied with power and working.
- Point your remote towards the TV and hold “Red” and “Blue.”
- Hold the “Volume Down” button on the remote control to test.
- Press the “Power” button on the remote once and then again.
- Check if the TV device turns off and turns on when pressing.
How to Program a Kogan Bluetooth Remote (USB Dongle)?
- Connect your USB dongle to one of the USB ports on the TV.
- Wait until the “Searching for Accessories” appears on the TV.
- Hold the Red and Blue buttons on the remote’s button keypad.
- Next, select the “SmartTV-RC” option on the TV dialogue panel.
- Wait until the remote control finalises the Bluetooth programming.
Notice: Pairing the remote to a non-Kogan TV will function as a universal remote!
3. Power Reset the TV Device
If your Kogan TV remote is not working, perhaps the problem comes from your TV, whether it’s a Kogan TV or any other television.
This is why we recommend performing a soft reset, also known as a “power cycle,” which will reset all TV services and hopefully fix the remote problem.
How to Power Cycle Kogan TV?
Tip: Pressing buttons on the remote helps even if the unit is unprogrammed.
- Press the “Power” button on the remote once to exit Standby.
- Hold the “Power” button for 3 seconds to power off the Kogan.
- Unplug the power cable from the back of the Kogan TV device.
- Wait for 60 seconds and reconnect the power cable of the TV.
- Press the “Power” button on the remote to test your Kogan TV.
How to Power Cycle Any Other TV?
- Hold the “Power” button on the remote control for 10 seconds.
- Next, unplug the power adapter from the back of the Kogan TV.
- Wait for 40-45 seconds while the power cable is disconnected.
- Next, re-attach the power cable back into the TV’s power port.
- Then, connect the power cable to the other end and test the TV.
Tip: Inspect the physical condition of the TV’s equipment while it is unplugged.
4. Test the Remote’s IR Blaster
Using an IR Kogan remote control, you can quickly test the IR blaster by pointing it toward your mobile phone’s camera and sending an input signal.
Since IR beams cannot be seen with the human eye, you need a hyperfocus lens, such as your phone’s, to see the infrared light output.
Here’s how to test the remote’s IR blaster:
- Open the “Camera” application on your mobile device.
- Next, point the remote’s “eye” into the mobile’s camera.
- Press and hold one of the buttons on the remote to test.
If the IR bulb of the remote appears illuminated while viewing it through your mobile phone’s camera, it’s successfully sending signals.
However, if you’re not seeing the bulb flickering when pressing buttons, your remote is likely not working.
Notice: If no light is visible on your phone’s camera, consider replacing the remote control!
5. Displace Existing Interference
Another reason why the Kogan Smart TV remote not working is due to a conflicting wireless interference with the unit’s IR signal.
Remember that wireless interference can only conflict with an IR signal, which uses direct radio waves to communicate with the receiver.
Alert: Wireless interference does not conflict with Bluetooth radio frequency!
Here’s what could interfere with the IR signal of your Kogan TV remote:
- Cordless phones or nearby RF transmitters.
- Metallic surfaces, devices, or microwaves.
- Nearby Bluetooth devices or routers/modems.
- Speakers, lamps, fans, or Wi-Fi access points.
Any device that transmits a signal in a similar way as your remote’s IR blaster could potentially interfere with the radio beam and cause communication errors.
Hence, ensure no other wireless devices are close to your Kogan TV, Smart TV, or IR receiver.
Tip: Try dislocating nearby appliances!
6. Clean the Kogan Battery Bed
One of the possible causes for the sudden malfunction of the remote is a disrupted connection between Kogan’s batteries and the electrical poles in the battery compartment.
The next step is to use materials to clean the Kogan remote compartment and any dust/debris accumulation.
Follow these steps to clean the battery bed of the Kogan remote control:
- Position your remote Kogan control upside down.
- Remove the battery compartment of the remote.
- Next, remove both of the batteries inside the bed.
- Use rubbing alcohol and a dry cloth for cleaning.
- Wait until the remote’s compartment fully dries up.
- Verify the springs are not bent, defective or missing.
- Embed the remote batteries correctly into the remote.
- Finally, close the compartment of the remote and test.
Do not reinsert the batteries while the remote control compartment has not thoroughly dried up, as this could lead to issues including electrical induction.
If you haven’t managed to remove all debris and obstructions in the compartment, use a more significant amount of rubbing alcohol.
Tip: Have you tried cleaning the remote using an anti-fiber cloth?
7. Factory Reset the Kogan Remote
You can address underlying issues with the Kogan remote control by factory resetting the unit and the connected Kogan TV or receiver device.
This solution will erase all the data and settings from your TV and remote but will help you solve or understand where the problem comes from.
Follow these instructions to factory reset any IR or Bluetooth Kogan remote control:
- Press the “Input/Source” button on the Kogan remote.
- Press “2-5-8-0” on your remote’s keypad in that order.
- With Kogan TV, go down to “Restore Factory Default.”
- Hold the “Power” button on the Kogan remote control.
- Press the “VOL +” button repeatedly to test the remote.
